Euastacus armatus 白惡鏽多刺螯蝦 -2
英文出處 :youtube vid
The Murray Cray or Murray Lobster is Australia's second largest freshwater crayfish and is widely distributed through the Murray River and many of it's tributaries. It is reputed to reach up to 3kg in weight, although such large crayfish are a rarity these days.
Murray Crayfish are the largest species of the Spiny Crayfish genus Euastacus and have long been a target of fisherman. Due to a considerable decline in their populations and the rarity of larger individuals, fishing for them is now banned in some areas and there are restrictions on when you can fish and how many and what size can be taken.
Although these are superficially similar to Yabbies, they have a very different life history and take a long time to reach maturity. The minimum legal OCL (eye socket to end of thorax length) is 10 cm and crayfish may take 9 –10 yeas to reach this size. A large individual may be 40 years old so please consider when catching them; they are best returned to the river. Their smaller more numerous cousins – the Yabbie (Cherax destructor) – on the other hand, reach maturity in around a year so are much more suited to being harvested for the pot!
The crayfish in this video were filmed in the upper reaches of the Goulburn River catchment in a high energy cool water environment. I spent 30 minutes snorkelling in the river to try and get this footage; the video shows 3 crays, the older one first (although still quite young) with white claws (chelae) and a couple of younger ones, one missing one of its chelae. During that time in the river I saw no native fish but numerous introduced Brown Trout, one of which is shown briefly in the video.
