💜🐾 Sometimes love means letting go. 🐾💜 And we were not the primary vet. So this is why it hurts us so much more. Prevention is always better

This sweet patient was still drinking water and accepting critical nutrition support, including nutritional recovery feeding, but unfortunately had reached Stage 4 Kidney Disease.

After discussing the prognosis, the family made the heartbreaking decision to choose euthanasia to prevent further suffering. It is never an easy choice, but sometimes it is the kindest one. We want to acknowledge how much they loved their dog and how dedicated they were throughout this journey.

This case highlights something every pet owner should know:

🚨 By the time traditional kidney values such as BUN and Creatinine become significantly elevated, up to 75% of kidney function may already be lost.

🩺 SDMA (Symmetric Dimethylarginine) is an earlier kidney biomarker that can detect changes in kidney function when as little as 25–40% of function has been lost, giving veterinarians a much earlier opportunity to investigate and intervene. Early detection can make a significant difference in management and quality of life.

That is why we strongly recommend:

✅ Annual wellness examinations
✅ Routine bloodwork and urine testing
✅ SDMA screening as part of senior pet monitoring
✅ Earlier screening for dogs over 5 years of age, especially as they enter their senior years

Many pets with kidney disease show little to no signs until the disease is advanced. Regular screening allows us to identify concerns sooner, start supportive care earlier, and potentially extend both quality and length of life.
