🐾 Dystocia in Dogs: When Whelping Goes Wrong 🐾

Dystocia, or difficult labor, is a life-threatening emergency that can happen in dogs, especially in singleton pregnancies (when there’s only one puppy). Singletons may be too large or not trigger labor properly, leading to C-section intervention.

🚨 Signs of Dystocia:
🔹 Straining for over 30 minutes without delivering
🔹 More than 2-3 hours between puppies
🔹 Weak contractions or no labor after due date
🔹 Signs of distress (panting, pain, lethargy)

⚠️ Causes of Dystocia:
🐕 Large puppy (common in singletons)
🐕 Small or narrow birth canal
🐕 Weak or absent uterine contractions
🐕 Malpositioned puppy

🩺 Treatment:
🚑 Emergency vet care is crucial! Many dystocias require a C-section to save the mother and puppy. Early intervention can mean the difference between life and death.

Managing Heat Stress in Livestock

Livestock farmers should take special care to ensure all animals have:
▪️Adequate Shade
▪️Clean cool water
▪️Proper ventilation
Remember pregnant females, young animals and some species of animals are not very tolerant of high temperatures e.g. Rabbits.
Here are a few tips to help your aniamls Beat the Heat:
▪️If Rabbits are over heating, you can place a damp pillow case at the base of cage for them to lie down on.
▪️Bury water tanks partially in the soil to keep water cool.
▪️Provide shade for water tanks to keep them cool e.g. Place under tree or shed.
▪️Paint water tanks white (so it absorbs less heat)
▪️Ensure extractor fans are working. As they remove humid stale oxygen particles and allow fresh air to come in, as opposed to conventional fans that just circulate that same humid air.
▪️Provide enough quality grass and forage. Some animals may be unwilling to eat too much ration/ pellets when it is very hot, as this may increase their body temperature.
▪️Ensure animals like cattle have fly control measures in place, so that flies do no not become a problem, especially around injured or very young animals.
▪️Avoid working or exerting animals at the hottest time of the day.
▪️Provide salt licks to replenish electrolytes lost by animals.
▪️Provide make shift sprinklers for large livestock ( cattle, horses) as this can help cool them off.
