MEDIA RELEASE: Anti-Rabies Unit Resumes Night Trapping Exercises

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries advises the public that the Anti-Rabies Unit (ARU) has resumed night trapping exercises in the South-East and South-West quadrants of Trinidad as part of the national Vampire Bat Population Control Programme. The exercises commenced on March 9, 2026, and will continue throughout Trinidad on an ongoing basis.

The operations will be conducted primarily during the night hours, when vampire bats are most active. These activities form part of the Ministry’s ongoing surveillance and control efforts to reduce the risk of rabies transmission and protect the country’s livestock population.

MEDIA RELEASE: Announcement of Sea Turtle Nesting Season

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) wishes to remind the public that the annual sea turtle nesting season runs from March 1st 2026 and will continue until August 31st, 2026 in Trinidad and Tobago. During this crucial period, the MAF emphasizes the importance of preserving sea turtle habitats and urges vigilance in beach activities to minimize disturbance to nesting sites.

Beachgoers are urged to exercise caution and refrain from engaging in activities that may disrupt sea turtle nesting behaviors. This includes refraining from biking, driving vehicles, building sand castles, or mining beach sand, as well as avoiding the use of flambeaus, fires, headlights, or any bright lights along the shoreline. Such activities can disorient sea turtles, leading to potential abandonment of nesting sites or disorientation of hatchlings.

To ensure the protection of sea turtles and their nesting sites, the public is encouraged to follow these guidelines:

- Refrain from sitting on turtles, as this can cause serious harm to their organs and may result in death.
- Reduce marine debris, such as plastics and fishing gear, to prevent entanglement of sea turtles.
- Participate in coastal clean-up efforts to remove debris and minimize hazards to marine life.

HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1) primarily affects nerve cells, causing common cold sores, but when it attacks the central nervous system (CNS), it leads to severe conditions like Herpes Meningoencephalitis, with symptoms including sudden fever, severe headache, confusion, seizures, personality changes, drowsiness, and neurological deficits, requiring immediate medical attention as it's a medical emergency. While most HSV-1 infections are mild (cold sores), CNS involvement is serious, affecting brain regions like the temporal lobe.

Common Manifestations (Nerve Cell Latency/Reactivation)
When HSV-1 hides in nerve cells (trigeminal nerve for oral herpes), symptoms are usually localized:

Cold Sores (Fever Blisters): Tingling, itching, or burning followed by painful blisters/sores on or around the mouth.

Ocular Herpes: Infection in the eye, causing gritty or painful eyes, potentially leading to blindness if untreated.

Severe CNS Involvement (Herpes Simplex Encephalitis/Meningitis)
This occurs when the virus travels to the brain and meninges (brain coverings).

Flu-like symptoms: Fever, fatigue, headache.

Neurological Deterioration: Confusion, altered mental state, memory issues, difficulty speaking (aphasia).

Behavioral Changes: Mood swings, personality shifts, bizarre behavior.

Seizures: A key symptom of brain inflammation (encephalitis).

Other: Neck stiffness, light sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, extreme drowsiness.

Presenting LORD Bagel 🥯

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a common spinal condition in dogs, also called a slipped, ruptured, or bulging disc. It occurs when the discs cushioning the vertebrae in the spine degenerate and press on the spinal cord, causing pain, weakness, or paralysis.

Symptoms range from reluctance to move, an arched back, and back or neck pain to wobbliness, loss of coordination, and inability to walk or urinate.

Treatment depends on severity:
Mild cases often involve conservative management: strict crate rest for several weeks, pain/anti-inflammatory medication, and physical rehabilitation.

Severe cases (especially with loss of walking ability) often require urgent surgery to remove the disc material and relieve pressure on the spinal cord
