Songkran provides the opportunity for family reunion. On this occasion, the young generations will return from other places to their hometowns. Songkran festival takes place on April 13 every year. Songkran is a Thai word means to "move" or "change place" as it is the day the sun changes its position in the zodiac. Hornbill, A True Love Story

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on Feb 14
in many parts of the world.
When we refer our Valentine, we speak of someone
we truly Love! …..Devotion, Action or Emotion……
could be called a true love?

Why are Hornbills regarded as a symbol of true love?
Hornbills play an important role in maintaining and
regenerating the forest because they are
a large bird living in rich biodiversity area.
They drop the seeds of the fruits they eat as they go,
dispersing them over a wide area. The important seeds will sprout and grow up in the forest.

Amazing story of this bird is being
honest until a couple will pass away.
It can be said that the female cannot live without
the male. Hornbill will not match a new one.
After mating, the female goes inside the hole and
seals the entrance with mud.
The male also protects and prevents his family from predators. The husband will find her the fruits. If the male dies or is poached, the female and babies may starve to death.

No Valentine’s Day plan? Come and celebrate Valentine’s Day with our Rhinoceros Hornbill next to Red Shanked Douc exhibit at Chiang Mai Zoo.

Coming Soon to Chiang Mai Zoo: Wildebeest
Look who is new at Chiang Mai Zoo?
Chiang Mai Zoo will soon be home to Wildebeest from Africa
that will be added to the exhibit. You will find them here, African Zone, Chiang Mai Zoo!

The gnu or wildebeest is a member of the antelope family,
although its heavy build and disproportionately large
forequarters make it look more bovine.

Gnus can reach 2.4 meters in length, stand 1.4 meters tall
at the shoulders and weigh up to 272 kilograms.
Both males and females grow horns.
Their habitat comprises the grassy plains and
open woodlands of central, southern, and eastern Africa, particularly the Serengeti in Tanzania and Kenya.
They travel in large herds and are active day and night,
grazing constantly.

Their spectacular northward migration in search of greener
pastures is dictated by weather patterns, but usually
takes place in May or June. It is considered
one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth,
involving up to 1.5 million wildebeests as well as hundreds
of thousands of other animals, including zebra and gazelle.
Up to 500,000 calves are born in February and March
each year, at the beginning of the rainy season.
Calves learn to walk within minutes of birth and within days
are able to keep up with the herd.
Gnus can live to be 20 years old.

White-Crowned Hornbill
and Wreathed Hornbill at Chiang Mai Zoo. (The hornbill's captive sanctuaries are next to Red-Shanked Douc)

Hornbills are quite a large bird. They are a symbol
of love, social and family togetherness. They will be
matched only once and to be honest until a couple
will pass away.

They will not match a new one and wait for its partner
till death. Of the 52 species of hornbills around
the world, hornbills first appeared in the fossil record about 45 millionyears ago.

Hornbills have a long tail, broad wings, and white
and black, brown, or gray feathers.
Hornbills are eating fruit, insects and small animals.
After mating, the female goes inside the hole
and seals the entrance with mud.
Food will be passed in by her husband via a small opening, just big enough for the beaks to pass through.
