WE CUT OUR CAKE AT THE GENDER REVEAL PARTY, AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE BLACK — I TURNED MY HEAD AND SAW MY MIL CRYING.
This was our first and long-awaited child, so we decided to throw a big gender reveal party, inviting the whole family! We entrusted the ultrasound results to my MIL and asked her to give them to the bakery.
On the big day, my mom helped with the decorations and hors d'oeuvres, and soon the gorgeous white cake arrived. The excitement was in the air as everyone counted down with us.
Amid applause, Jerry and I sliced into the cake. But as we pulled out the first slice, the room fell silent — the inside of the cake was completely BLACK.
We were confused, and as I looked around, I noticed my MIL. HOW COULD I HAVE MISSED IT? She was dressed in black and wiping away tears. ⬇️

My grandmother, Helen, lived alone in a small house surrounded by the most beautiful garden I’d ever seen. At 80, she had become a lonely figure, shunned by our family. They abandoned her, dismissing her as a poor old woman who rambled endlessly about her flowers.
But I always loved her. Unfortunately, I lived hundreds of kilometers away and couldn’t visit as often as I wanted.
Then, one day, Grandma called.
“Dear, please come. I don’t feel well, perhaps these are my last days,” she said.
I was just after a messy divorce, juggling the care of my three kids. But I didn’t hesitate. I bought tickets for us, packed our bags, and flew to be by her side. It was her 80th birthday, and I couldn’t bear the thought of her spending it alone!
I organized a small celebration to cheer her up. But she constantly asked me to replant her daisies in a pot. I thought it was a quirk, but I wanted to please her, so I put on gloves and went outside. But while digging, my hand hit something hard—a metal box buried just beneath the surface.

In college, I met Liam. He wasn't like the wealthy guys my parents pushed on me — he was kind, humble, and studying to be a teacher. When we got engaged, my parents flipped. "A teacher? How will he take care of you? Or us?" They gave me an ultimatum: leave Liam or lose them. I chose Liam.
On my wedding day, their seats stayed empty. But Grandpa was there. He hugged me and said, "Love matters more than money." For ten years, my parents stayed out of my life, but Grandpa supported us however he could. Liam and I didn't have much but built a happy, simple life with our daughter, Sophie.
Then Grandpa passed away.
After the service, my parents approached me for the first time in a decade. "We're so sorry, Emma," my mom said, her voice shaking. "Please, can we try to rebuild our relationship?" It sounded sincere, and for a moment, I considered it. Liam and I were still struggling — why now?

It was nearly midnight, and Cleo was eager to get home to her warm bed and fluffy cat, Chester. Then she spotted him. From a distance, he looked rough, and disheveled, like a homeless man — someone who'd clearly been through a lot. His clothes were filthy, his hair matted, and he clutched his arm as he limped along, looking like he hadn't eaten or slept in days.
Most would have driven on, especially a heavily pregnant woman. But something about him made her stop; he looked vulnerable against the cold night.
She lowered the window. "You okay?"
The man looked up. "I just need to get somewhere safe."
Without hesitation, Cleo unlocked the door. "Get in. I'll take you to the hospital."
He climbed in, his gratitude evident. "Thank you. Most wouldn't stop."
The drive was quiet. At the hospital, he looked back after getting out, saying, "You didn't have to do this."
The next morning, Cleo awoke to a strange sound, like low thunder. Pulling back her curtains, she gasped at a motorcade of black SUVs outside her apartment. Had she helped a criminal?
