Making A Difference to Soi Dogs in our local community of Nakhon Sawan, Thailand.

This is Miss Cha Nom she is around 6 months old and her owner reached out to us because she was unwell and not eating.

We took her to the vet to run a series of tests and she was diagnosed with feline distemper.
This was a few days ago and she is still unwell but her two siblings have since passed away.

She is going to have to be strong to pull through this as its a terrible illness for both cats and dogs.

Last week I posted about a group of dogs who sometime ago chased my bike at night and how I dealt with it.

These two males were the more confident of the group while the other more fearful dogs remained in the background these two are the ones I concentrated on that night.

I don't have their complete trust, probably because how they have been historicaly treated but I at least have their respect through my own confidence exceeding theirs.

What I no longer have is them chasing me and I can even disagree with them if I see them chase someone else and they listen.

If they see me they approach in calm curiosity knowing I don't mean them harm but they have never given me consent to allow me to touch them. I too have to respect that. I would have to spend so much time with them to take the bonding further and its time I simply don't have.

But the rest of the group are fine and hopefully safer by being a little calmer and trusting around humans. They have probably never met a fear free human before.

6 cats were vaccinated yesterday. The 4 kittens are all female and will be spayed by us when they are old enough in a few months time.

You may remember Mr Chockdee (Lucky in Thai) who wondered onto our local temple and the dogs who reside there decided to chase him. He ran into the temple building for safety and into the monks bedroom and they have since struck up a bond.

The monk asked us if we could neuter him so he doesn't feel the need to wander so we did just that back at the beginning of July.

This is Mr Big and he was hit by a motorcycle this morning. We were asked by his owner if we could help get him to the vet.

The diagnosis was he has a fracture to the upper part of his back leg and a small wound.
Pain killer and antiinflammatory injections were administered and he will be on these in pill form for the coming days and maybe even weeks in addition to calcium supplements for a few months.

The owner paid the vet bill which is a rare event here so Mr Big is a very loved boy but we were glad to have played our part and been able to help him get the help he needed.

Mr Sammy stopped eating yesterday which is a worry for a dog of his age. We had him to the vet today for a series of tests and the diagnosis was Sammy was shown to have blood parasite infection, low platelet count and high level of white blood cell count.

For the next three days he will have to go back to have some injections and is on medication for the next 8 days which we can administer at home.

Thankfully his kidney and liver function is normal and tonight he ate OK but is still very lethargic and tired.

A few years ago I went down a Soi I rarely go down to be confronted by a group of dogs barking and trying to chase my bike being unsure who I was.

I have learnt down the years that my confidence must exceed theirs and by walking towards them with that confidence negates their prey drive. I am not interested in the less confident dogs at the back only the ones nearest to me. In addition to the odd verbal disagreement he backed down and the others naturally follow. I also know never to raise my hand as that can be seen as a potential threat of violence.

I made going down that Soi my mission every day and night to win them over using calm, confidence and most importantly kindness.

After a month it paid off. At first I had calm curiosity followed by their consent to allow me to touch them with affection.

Fast forward to today I have quite a bond with them especially Miss Jackie here who is the only female and we had her spayed some time ago. It has also allowed us to treat them medically for various conditions down the years. The patience paid off.

Mr Eric had his stitches out. Actually he took them out himself. That wound and the other wounds we treated him for after a fight have fully healed.

Hoping he calms a little and stops chasing the bikes. It takes around 6 months for the testosterone to wind down. He is calm with me but not so much with people carrying sticks which is a trigger for him.

Mr Eric is back home after bring patched up and neutered. Miss MeMe was pleased to see him. She didn't eat while he was away.

Mr Eric was patched up yesterday with stitches for some wounds and treatment for others. While we had him in we had him neutered as well and a good ear clean.

Despite being very nervous we kept him fairly calm throughout and he will have his stitches out in around a weeks time. This morning he ate well and had his medication.
