Evita passed away after a severe neurological episode caused by epilepsy. In her final days, she experienced multiple seizures and was unable to recover between them, gradually losing her ability to rest, orient herself, and function normally. In the end, only her basic instincts remained: eating and retrieving, trying to play with toys or anything she could reach.
She no longer knew how to relieve herself, relax, or sleep. At first, she moved in circles and ran aimlessly in the yard; on her final day, she could only walk, as her body was exhausted while her brain remained overactive. She even forgot how to eat from a bowl and became afraid of it, so we gently taught her again on the first day of the cluster episode (15 April 2026). We were able to help her relearn simple things like going upstairs, but towards the end, we had to assist her even into the car, and she was then afraid to get out. At the beginning, she seemed as if she had suffered a concussion: fearful of everything, walking backwards and in circles. The other dogs sensed that something was wrong, and some reacted uneasily to her.
Earlier this month, we noticed the first subtle sign: she had forgotten how to swim, something she had always loved. We helped her relearn by going into the Krka River ourselves, encouraging her to join us. She did, and she was so proud of herself when she succeeded, even overcoming a fear that had suddenly appeared. That moment now feels especially meaningful, as it was the first indication that something was changing.
On her final morning, she had her last breakfast, which she ate normally. She remained gentle and tolerant, as she always was, allowing another dog to be near her while she ate. Afterwards, she greeted her favourite cat, Metka, at the very place where she had had her last seizure some hours earlier, and then said goodbye to the rest of the dogs through the fence. By then, she no longer “spoke dog”, and her presence unsettled some of them. We helped her into the car for her final ride, which was no longer the experience she once knew.
She was peacefully put to sleep today, 16 April 2026, after her condition rapidly worsened and she could no longer recover. She left us calm and at peace, finally able to rest.
