Did You Know?
There have been articles putting down Dental Scaling without Anesthesia (DSWA), blaming its results for not being the same as Dental scaling with Anesthesia (DSA), hence still resulting in gum disease in furkids.
Why? Some argue that as our furkids are ultimately still conscious throughout the entire process, DSWA may not be able to reach right beneath the gums to get it cleaned, making it useless. 2 things to consider.
1. Let’s say you head to the dentist from time to time to do teeth whitening and cleaning. Do you then, stop brushing your teeth everyday? Or stop flossing or not do your own dental hygiene from time to time anymore? Would it harm you to clean more often? Similarly for your furkids, why would it harm them by sending them for DSWA? Even if it may not be as effective as DSA, it still cleans out most of the plaque, preventing accumulation of plaque and reducing chances of gum disease. Comparing this to purely sending them to DSA once in a long while, kindly do the math. If your furkid is suitable for DSA, you can always maintain their dental health by sending them to both DSWA frequently and DSA from time to time to ensure optimal cleanliness.
2. As effective as DSA can be, it can never entirely rule out the possibilities of gum disease. It just helps to reduce the chances of it. By choosing just one over the other, or none at all, you are potentially putting your furkid’s dental health in danger. DSA also tends to cost a lot more than DSWA and you are not encouraged to do it too often.
Possible Pros & Cons of DSWA -
Pros: Problem about Anesthesia
No matter how safe it can get, we are sedating our furkids with drugs, and there are bound to be side effects involved. Are you prepared for the worst? Is the potentially slightly more clean scaling worth the risks?
Pros: Age, Illness etc.
For pets that are getting on with age or have certain illnesses, DSA will bring about higher risks for your furkid. Especially those who are highly or completely unsuitable for anaesthesia, DSWA will be your next best option.
Cons: Character of your Furkid
Yes, for sure, DSWA MAY not have as effective of a result as DSA, because your furkid is after all STILL CONSCIOUS. They may struggle, move about, or even attempt to bite because they are uncomfortable or dislike staying in one position. If your furkid is more tender in nature, they will benefit the most out of DSWA. If your furkid is known to bite or be aggressive in such a setting or generally, DSA will be recommended, provided your furkid is suitable for anesthesia.
* Above are purely Skyler’s Haven views and opinion in helping furkid’s parents have a better understanding of Dental Scaling. Skyler’s Haven does not solely support DSWA or DSA, but merely giving an open view about the misunderstandings of DSWA that furkid’s parents may have. Depending on many factors from your furkid, parents should make the right decision for them accordingly. No one practice is correct or wrong, it’s all about how you view them.
* Play time is available to dogs that Skyler's Haven deem non-aggressive. This is for the safety of all furkids. Thank you for your understanding. :)
