Who said cats can’t do exercise? 🐱💞

Cats can benefit from physiotherapy too!! especially for pain management, mobility support, muscle strengthening, arthritis care, post-surgery recovery, and improving quality of life ✨

At The Pet Physio, we always prioritise both their physical and emotional comfort. No forcing, no stressful handling 🥰 just gentle positive encouragement, patience, and working at their pace to help them feel safe and confident during sessions.

Many cats actually learn to cooperate very well once they feel comfortable, and we also guide owners on home exercises and management techniques to continue supporting them at home.

We do work with cats too, especially through home visit sessions, where they tend to feel more relaxed and comfortable in their own environment 🏠🐾

Because every cat deserves to move comfortably and live stronger too 💪🏻

🐶 Why Do Dogs Become Obese? (And what you can do about it)

Dog obesity is one of the most common and preventable health issues we see! Excess weight can affect mobility, joints, and overall health.

Here’s what’s really behind it 👀

1️⃣ Diet & Feeding Habits
Even small extras add up. Overfeeding, frequent treats, table scraps, or free feeding can easily exceed your dog’s daily needs.

2️⃣ Lack of Exercise
Less movement means fewer calories burned. Indoor lifestyles or irregular walks can quickly lead to weight gain.

3️⃣ Age & Life Stage
As dogs age, metabolism slows down. If diet stays the same but activity drops, weight increases gradually over time.

4️⃣ Medical Conditions
Conditions like hypothyroidism or Cushing’s disease can cause weight gain even when food intake is normal.

5️⃣ Medications
Some medications, especially long-term use, can increase appetite or reduce activity levels.

6️⃣ Genetics & Breed
Some dogs are naturally more prone to gaining weight and may require stricter portion control.

7️⃣ Neutering / Hormones
Hormonal changes can slow metabolism and increase appetite, making weight management more important after neutering.

8️⃣ Owner Lifestyle
Your dog’s routine reflects yours! Less active routines or using food as love can contribute more than we realize.

Most dog owners don’t realise the first signs of joint pain happen during the ‘quiet moments at home’ 🥺

Not during the walk.
Not at the vet.
But in the evening, after your dog has been resting 🐾

Here’s a quick 5-minute check we encourage our pawrents to do after work:

🐶 Watch how your dog gets up after lying down
🐶 Notice if they hesitate before jumping onto the sofa
🐶 Check if they “bunny hop” when excited
🐶 See whether they sit unevenly to one side
🐶 Compare muscle size between left and right hind legs

These tiny signs are often the earliest clues of issues like:

📌 early arthritis
📌 luxating patella
📌 hip discomfort
📌 post-op weakness
📌 compensatory pain from old injuries

💡 The good news? Catching it early can make rehab much easier and often prevents long-term decline 🤩

A lot of us are busy professionals, so these simple at-home observations help us intervene before the issue becomes severe.

If your dog has started slowing down, avoiding stairs, or moving differently, it may not be “just age”. Sometimes it’s simply their way of asking for help 🫂

What’s one small movement change you’ve noticed in your dog recently? Let us know in the comments 🤓

Hello, I’m Kenneth 👋

I’m a human physiotherapist now bringing my skills into the world of canine and feline rehabilitation 🐾

With a background in clinical research, I’ve learnt to focus on what truly matters: maximising movement, longevity, and quality of life. I’m here to help you feel informed, supported, and confident as a partner in your pet’s recovery journey.

Fun fact about me:
As a former pet groomer, I developed a kind of “sixth sense” for animal behaviour and how to keep pets calm and comfortable. In my free time, you’ll usually find me exploring on two wheels 🚲 or deep in a game of chess ♟️

Looking forward to meeting you and your furry ones at the clinic and supporting their journey to better movement and comfort 🐶🐱💛

When you’re mid-workout but also checking if your pawrent is watching 👀👅

Hydro session mode: ON
Focus: questionable
Cuteness: 100%

💡Fun fact:
Dogs sticking their tongue out during hydro isn’t just being cute, it can be a sign they’re regulating effort and staying relaxed in the water.

A calm, happy dog = better quality movement and muscle activation 💪💦

📝 Pro tip:
We aim for controlled, consistent steps in the hydro tank, not rushing through sets so your pup builds strength safely without overcompensating 🐾

Post-workout recovery… but make it ✨portable✨ 👜🐶

After hydro, now reporting to reception for snacks, cuddles, and billing supervision.

💡: After exercise, dogs need proper recovery too! This includes rest, hydration, and sometimes soft tissue work (like massage) to help muscles rebuild stronger, just like us humans 💪

📝 Pro tip for pawrents:
Don’t let your pup go straight from intense activity to full rest mode all day. A proper cool down (slow walking, gentle stretches) helps reduce soreness and injury risk!

In honour of Mental Health Month, let’s take a moment to appreciate how our pets do more than just make us smile 🐾

Spending time with them lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) and boosts serotonin and dopamine — the same chemicals that improve mood and motivation.

When we walk, play, or even sit quietly beside them, our breathing slows, our hearts sync, and tension eases. Their calm presence encourages mindfulness, helping us live in the moment, just like they do.

Regular routines like feeding, grooming, or doing rehab exercises also bring structure and purpose to our day. And every wag, stretch, or gentle purr becomes a reminder of progress, connection, and unconditional love.

So the next time your pet curls up beside you or looks at you with those eyes — take a breath, smile, and know they’re doing wonders for your mind as much as your heart. 💕

Because sometimes, the best kind of therapy really does have fur and four paws 🐕✨
