3 weeks back, we received a help request after a bunny got startled by a loud sound and panicked, running frantically around the playpen before getting injured.
After the incident, his breathing became very fast. We initially advised the owner to let him rest first, but he still wasn’t eating on his own afterwards.
Upon arrival, we performed our assessment — checking for limping, doing gut mobility checks, and an overall physical examination. Thankfully, nothing major was found initially and the gut condition was still stable at that point.
As we gradually ruled out gut-related issues when his breathing slowly calmed down, we noticed soreness on the lower right side and suspected there could be a fracture despite there being no obvious external wounds initially.
True enough, further checks later on the next day confirmed a jaw fracture. Thankfully, we managed to intervene early, maintain his gut condition, and support him before things deteriorated further. Good to know his blood test results were stable as well.
This is why close observation during the first few hours is extremely important for rabbits. Sometimes the injury itself may not look obvious initially, but subtle signs like changes in breathing, posture, appetite, or movement can tell us a lot.
Many owners naturally want to monitor on their own first with the best intentions 🙏 However, sometimes it’s better to let us do what we do best.
Early intervention gives the bunny a much better chance of a smoother and better recovery before the condition deteriorates further, especially when it comes to pain, stress, or gut slowdown.
