A common question I get asked by students was whether they can share their beds and couches with their dogs. My answer to them is usually “no”. It's not because I don’t practice that personally. In fact, when dogs are struggling with behavioural issues such as fear, anxiety, resource guarding and reactivity, any unnecessary affection and privileges will reinforce these unwanted behaviours. On the flip side, if your dog listens to you well and you share a great relationship with them, then feel free to give them access to any privileges and affection.
Dog training is not rocket science. Rewards increase behavioural occurrences, whether desired or undesired. If you're not quite there yet, work on the foundation, obedience and discipline. That's the road to a good, strong relationship with your dog where you can eventually do anything you want with them.
