The Case for More Carrot: Why Our Bunnies Deserve More Treats
Friends, honored guests, and fellow servants of our fluffy overlords. We are here today to discuss a grave injustice. A tragic, heartbreaking, and simply unacceptable situation happening in households across the nation. I am speaking, of course, about the alarming scarcity of treats being given to our rabbits. Look at them. Look at those twitching noses. Those ears that can hear a carrot peel three rooms away. Those innocent, dark eyes that seem to say, "I havenât eaten in three weeks," even though you just refilled their hay five minutes ago.You may ask, "But isnât a rabbitâs diet mainly hay?"
I say: Yes, technically! 80-90% of their diet should be hay, according to the experts at Rabbits.org and the RSPCA.
BUT! Is that any way to live? A life of strictly fibrous, green hay? Imagine if every meal you ate was just bran flakes. No sauce, no spice, no occasional chocolate chip cookie. Youâd be miserable! Bunnies deserve to be pampered. Treatsâlike a tiny piece of fruit, a slice of apple, or a single blueberryâare not just food; they are an experience! Treats provide necessary mental stimulation and variety, preventing our bunnies from getting bored and turning our furniture into sawdust. Think of the happiness! A few treats a day brings about the mythical âbinkyââthe joy-filled jump-and-twist dance that only a truly satisfied bunny can perform. Do we want to live in a world with fewer binkies? I think not!
Now, I am a responsible advocate. Iâm not saying we should feed them sugar cookies. Iâm asking for thoughtful, healthy treats.More cilantro sprigs! More dried herbs! More slices of pear! We must stop being disciplined caregivers for just five seconds and start being the fun, indulgent best friends our rabbits think we are. Letâs face it, that sweet, expectant face is impossible to say no to!
So, I urge you: Take that extra slice of banana. Go to the kitchen. And let us make our bunnies' lives just a little bit sweeter.
Thank you, and let there be treats!
