Did you know? 🤔

Superficial abscesses and erosions of the shell, otherwise referred to as ‘shell rot’, is a common condition that occurs in terrapins. This disease is characterized by discoloration and defects of the shell that sometimes occur in association with mycotic (fungal) or bacterial infections. Due to this, the disease may appear to owners as discolorations of the shell that may be pale or bloody, along with loose scutes (the external plates of the shell).
As is the case with the overwhelming majority of reptile diseases, husbandry and hygiene are key aspects that need to be addressed in order to ensure resolution.

Risk factors include :

• Absence of a filtration system
• Infrequent water changes
• Inappropriate temperature and humidity
• Absence of a dry or basking area
• Overcrowding
• Poor nutrition

The cornerstones of treatment typically involve debridement/removal of loose and necrotic scutes, antibiotic/antifungal treatment, together with topical ointments and antiseptic baths. Environmental modification is likewise a critical aspect of treatment since the disease has a strong foundation in erroneous husbandry. 🐢💦

As we wrap up the first week of April, we had the privilege of joining Dr. Jerzy in Thailand, where Dr. Wendy teamed up with him to contribute to wildlife dental care, and in Singapore, where he held an insightful talk and visited our clinic.

It was an enriching session for the veterinary community, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.

A heartfelt thank you to all the veterinarians who attended and contributed to the success of this event. Your passion and dedication to advancing veterinary care are truly inspiring.

A special thank you to and for your generous support in sponsoring this event. Your commitment to veterinary care is deeply appreciated! 🙏

Looking forward to more opportunities to connect and grow within this incredible field 💛

Dental disease can appear in puppies as young as 6 weeks old and can easily go unnoticed by owners until they are 6 months or older. This post describes 4 common congenital puppy dental issues – linguoverted canines, retained deciduous teeth, overbite/ underbite, and unerupted teeth.
If you have concerns about your puppy having such dental issues, feel free to call 6635 8646 (Toa Payoh) or 6346 8646 (Swan Lake) to book an appointment for a detailed oral examination. By bringing your puppy for regular check-ups and vaccinations, your veterinarian will be able to identify these issues sooner and recommend appropriate treatment or therapy.

It has been such an intense time for our team. We had the pleasure of having Dr. Vladimir Jekl, a world renowned small animal exotic specialist visit us last week.

We worked with many high risk and complicated surgical patients. Nonetheless, the team worked really well alongside Dr Jekl, and we have certainly learnt a lot under his invaluable guidance.

It was truly a pleasure having him over at Vet Central.

Minoxidil: A miracle drug for hair loss, but deadly to cats.

Originally intended as a form of treatment for hypertension, Minoxidil can now be found as a topical medication for hair growth in humans. Unfortunately for our feline friends, accidental exposure to just 1 drop of this medication can lead to serious illness.

Severity of disease depends on the amount of Minoxidil consumed. Signs of toxicity you should look out for include:
- Anorexia
- Vomiting
- Lethargy
- Increased respiratory rate
- Difficulty/ laboured breathing
- Hypothermia (low body temperature)
- Cardiovascular damage and death

If Minoxidil is present in your household, it should be kept somewhere secure and completely inaccessible to your pets. After applying Minoxidil, remember to wash your hands thoroughly and refrain from letting your cats go near to your head or pillows.

In Singapore, this product is commonly marketed under the names “Growell Minoxidil 5%” or “Regro Minoxidil 5%”.

If you suspect Minoxidil intoxication in your cat, this is an emergency and you should bring them to the nearest vet clinic ASAP.
