Many studies have shown that writing and drawing engages our brains far more than typing. ⁣
⁣
According to NeuroRelay, the process of writing stimulates a collection of cells in the base of our brains knows as the reticular activating system. This system acts as a filter for all the information our brains need to process, and it gives more attention to what we are focusing on at that particular point. Therefore when we write, our brain pays close attention to what we’re writing. This encourages memory retention. ⁣
⁣
In one particular study, it also highlighted that writing can serve as a calming, meditative tool which is a helpful stress coping method. Keeping a journal or free-writing exercises can drastically reduce stress levels. ⁣
⁣
As digital learning takes its permanent place in our lives now, we have to remember that it remains important for children to access opportunities to engage this fundamental skill of writing.

Recent events have reminded many of us, especially parents, the importance of safety - physical, mental and emotional safety. ⁣
⁣
As I tucked my 8-year-old into bed last night, I hugged him a little tighter than usual and envisioned the future society that he’ll be in. ⁣
⁣
I hope that he’ll be in a community that values collaboration and community over competition. I hope that in that future, people rise by lifting each other up. ⁣
⁣
It has been challenging to helm all areas of this project by myself, but I’m reminded of why I started this and am further affirmed of my decision to continue building this little community. ⁣
⁣

Sometimes in our quest for fairness, we jump in too quickly to correct the behaviour and mete out consequences. Sometimes we forget how hard it is for children to make sense of this world, learning what’s right and wrong, what’s good and not. Sometimes all they want is a listening ear, wanting their feelings to be heard. But so often all they feel is hurt. ⠀

Let us remind ourselves to seek first to understand, then to be understood. Let us listen first, before we talk.⠀

Behind every Monthly Happy Mail, EDUBite and every letter that is mailed out, are hours of research, reading and designing. The internet provides vastness in information that is readily available, but books such as these provide the richness and inspiration in content that can never quite be replaced.

Writing begins for children when they are able to direct a writing tool onto a medium of their choice (sometimes not ours 😂). Once they discover their power to create, their natural curiosity will encourage them to do it again and again. Thus it is important for parents not to be too quick to correct this behaviour, labelling it as wrong or naughty. Let’s gently redirect them to the paper or anywhere suitable, and encourage them by joining them.

Before we understand writing, we need to redefine our own definition of drawing first. People would often say “I can’t draw” because as adults, we carry a certain level of expectation as to what is considered a drawing. Therefore, we need to be conscious not to transfer the same level of expectation on to children especially during their early years. parenting
