The Forge and Farriers', 1907

The pre-mechanised British Army could only operate in the various far-flung places of the British Empire due to the work of a vast logistical support team.
With thousands of horses that needed feeding, cleaning and looking after the army employed Farriers, Vets, Grooms and stable lads.

The farriers' main job was primarily hoof trimming and fitting horsehoes to Army horses. This combined traditional blacksmith's skills with some veterinarian knowledge about the physiology and care of horses' feet. Most farriers were NCOs; the majority serving with artillery and cavalry regiments. One of their other tasks was the humane despatch of wounded and sick horses.
