WHAT ARE SOME OF THE REASONS WHY TENDON INJURIES ARE SO COMMON IN HORSES?
We’ve all heard people say it’s often better to break a bone than rupture a tendon. And we all dread hearing that a horse has a tendon injury as we know that often means a long lay-off and long rehab. And often an injured tendon reinjures even after all this.
Large tendons are one of the reasons horses are so athletic in both running and jumping as tendons allow energy recovery on each stride
Tendons are mainly comprised of non-living tissue (~90%), have a poor blood supply and very limited capacity for repair, unlike bone
Domesticated horses, sport and racehorse in particular, tend to do more exercise in the gaits that load the tendons more i.e. canter and gallop than horses in the wild.
When badly injured tendon’s repair by laying down scar tissue which is not as elastic as healthy tendon tissue
Bone can adapt to training and exercise
Exercise that leads to the tendons becoming very warm can lead to death of tendon cells and an inflammatory response that breaks down the tendon elastic and connective tissue
A horses’ flexor tendons in the lower legs are loaded close to the point of failure when galloping
Most tendon injuries are the result of accumulated damage as opposed to single “accidents” – essentially tendons get worn out!
