I had thought that today I would be able to post some lovely pictures of the kittens. Instead, I have to share the sad news that the beautiful little fawn silver female passed away yesterday. 😭
Everything happened so quickly. Both kittens had been eating well and gaining weight every day. But yesterday, around 4 p.m., my co-owner/guardian Helena noticed that the little girl seemed a bit more tired, not as active. She tried to nurse but kept losing her grip. Helena gave her fluids every 20–30 minutes to see if she would perk up. After 3–4 times, we switched to a mix of fluids and milk replacement. Later in the evening, Helena called and said things were not going well — the little one was limp and lethargic. We went through checking whether she was breathing, etc. Suddenly, she made a croaking sound and urinated. She passed away. We had a veterinarian on the phone and tried to perform CPR and chest compressions, but nothing worked. She was gone.
This is when the worry for the little boy began — would he also become tired and lose strength? I received a video from Helena where we thought his breathing looked strange. We went straight to the emergency animal hospital. He was examined, but nothing abnormal could be found. The veterinarian saw and heard no visible issues. He examined the little girl as well, and there were no visible abnormalities there either. The veterinarian mentioned that it could have been a congenital defect and that it is unlikely that both kittens would have malformations. He also examined the mother cat, and there was nothing to note. The veterinarian said we could go home and simply continue to monitor them closely. Everything has gone well since; the little boy has gained weight nicely and continues to behave as expected.
The mother cat is tense and did not want to lie in the nesting box. She took the little boy and lay down under the duvet in the bed. So now the focus is on calming the mother and making sure that the little boy continues to grow and thrive.
