🌟 Recovery day = Wellness day?! 🐾

🐾 Are you already helping your furry athletes with improving their recovery on a rest day, when they swap their harnesses for an extended wellness session? If not, maybe the following information can be of some benefit for you. 💖

✅️ You can check each dog for muscle tension and stiffness and then give them a nice massage, focusing on specific areas of concern. ⚠️

👍 The main benefits of massage:

▶️ Faster Recovery and Less Pain:

Helps to more quickly remove waste products (such as lactic acid) from the muscles, reduces muscle tension, and relieves pain. Crucial after strenuous exercise.

▶️ Improved Blood Flow:

Stimulates blood circulation, which ensures a better supply of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and tissues.

▶️ Injury Prevention:

Keeps muscles, tendons, and joints more flexible, reducing the risk of stiffness and injuries (such as muscle knots or adhesions).

▶️ Relaxation and Stress Reduction:

Provides mental peace, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, and promotes the production of "happy hormones" (endorphins/oxytocin).

▶️ Body Awareness:
Improves body awareness and balance, which is important for their performance and overall range of motion.

🔋In short, massage is a powerful way to support physical recovery and promote mental well-being.

Of course, a hug at the end is a must! ❤️

📹⚡️ Watch this video to see the reaction when palpating a myofascial trigger point in the paraspinal muscles of a sleddog.⚡️

▶️ Myofascial trigger points are tender spots in the muscles that can cause pain and discomfort. They often arise from overuse, stress, or injury and can manifest as knots in the muscles. When these trigger points are touched or palpated, they can cause localized pain, but also radiating pain to other parts of the body.

▶️ They affect the body in several ways:

📌 1. Pain: They can cause chronic pain, which can sometimes be difficult to locate.

📌 2. Muscle weakness: Muscles with trigger points can have reduced strength, which affects function and performance.

📌 3. Limited range of motion: Trigger points can lead to stiffness and limited range of motion in joints.

📌 4. Postural changes: Pain and discomfort can lead to compensatory postures, which can cause other long-term problems.

▶️ Treating myofascial trigger points can help relieve pain and improve overall function.

▶️ Methods such as massage, dry needling and stretching are often used to address these points.

👍🐾 Keep your hard-working athletes healthy and happy by monitoring them closely and, if you have any doubts about a (potential) injury, consult a professional.

🐺 A healthy dog is a happy dog 🦊
Therefore, give your dog a regular preventative (sports) check-up.

What does this check-up entail?
✅️ I analyze your dog's posture and movement.
✅️ I check whether your dog has a full, pain-free, and smooth range of motion.
✅️ I feel all muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments for tenderness and abnormalities.

🔎 I address minor irregularities immediately. If necessary, I advise you to see your veterinarian for further examination and/or a referral for treatment.

📝 After the check-up, you will receive a report with my findings and recommendations.
This way, you'll know if everything is okay, what you can do to support your dog preventatively, and prevent unnecessary injuries.

❓️Want to know more?
Feel free to send me a message!

🐾 A nice memory of my physio- and hydrotherapy work at the vet clinic in the Netherlands, where I sometimes took one of my own dogs with me. This time, sweet Danicha had the honour. ❤️

For this edition of the Dutch magazine 'Onze Hond' I wrote an article about sled dogs on behalf of the Dutch Association for Physiotherapy in Animals - NVFD.

Proud of the result with my own huskies Mishca and Kayleigh as eye-catcher! ❤️

🚶Make your walk a fun workout! 🦊🐺

Did you know that you can turn a regular walk into an adventurous workout for your dog?!🌲Use nature as your gym! 💪

▶️ For example, let your dog stand on a tree stump or against a tree. This is a great muscle-strengthening exercise for the hindquarters!

▶️ This is not only good for your dog's physical health, but it's also a fun way to stimulate him mentally.

▶️ Vary the exercises and locations to make it a new challenge for the both of you every time again!

🤎🧡🤍 Have fun! 🖤🩶🤍
