Posted • ._.student Understanding the process of skeletal maturity in horses is crucial for appropriate management, training and care. Skeletal maturity refers to the point at which a horse’s bones have fully developed and growth plates have ossified. Skeletal maturity in horses signifies the completion of bone growth and the closure of growth plates. It is important to not that skeletal maturity doesn’t necessarily mean the horse has stopped growing in all aspects, as soft tissue and muscle development may continue. The age at which horses reach skeletal maturity varies depending on a number of factors including breed and genetics. Most horses reach skeletal maturity between the ages of four and six years. However, it is essential to assess individual horses based on their development rather than relying solely on their age.

When the movement of the intestinal contents slows or stops and mucus production continues, mucus accumulates on the surface of manure. Manure coated in mucus is a sign of abnormally reduced intestinal movement that may result from a variety of disease processes.

This can be a sign that the horse has passed a colic episode. As the weather is getting hotter, please be aware of colic.
* Hydrate your horse and offer electrolytes
* Make sure water buckets are clean and water fresh
* Reduce grains and soak 15 minutes before feeding
* Add a good oil such as linseed or omega 3 to the grains
* Provide free choice hay
* Provide some form of exercise daily, but be aware of heat distress . Do not over exercise during high temperatures. Just as humans, movement helps keep gut motion consistent.

Signs of colic;
1. Trying to bite the abdomen
2. Walking in circles
3. Laying down frequently
4. Sweating without exercise
5. No manure or no urine output
6. Rolling in the dirt frequently
7. Emergency: lack of intestinal sounds

You can tell a lot from the eyes of the horse.

Horses are very expressive and have some of the most variety in facial expressions of any non-primate species.

This photo set is the same horse before and after he relaxed from stress.

When frightened, anxious and/or pain, the eye tends to hold more tension and creates a “peak” above the eye as the eye lid pulls up into a triangulated shape due to muscular tension around the eye.

This doesn’t necessarily need to be due to acute stressors, though with high levels of stress, you tend to see an increase in the extent of the tension.

Even for momentary stressors, the expression of the eye will shift while the horse assesses whether or not a threat is present.

Noticing these subtle shifts can be the difference between preparing for a potential flight response and being entirely blindsided when your horse reacts seemingly “out of nowhere.”

It can also be helpful in diagnosing potential soundness issues before they manifest in a more chronic and obvious manner.

The eyes, in my opinion, are the most expressive part of the body and tend to be the first area to show stress, whether it’s a low grade stressor or an acute one.

Practicing taking notice of shifts in your horse’s facial expressions can be instrumental in improved horsemanship.

Posted • Sidebone on an Icelandichorse. Not a common sight on this breed. But also the absolutely biggest one I’ve seen on an Icelandichorse since I started as a farrier. This is probably because of years of trying to balance those crooked lower legs. You can see on the x-ray on top, that the joints don’t look straight at all. Cartilage starting to grow bigger and bigger throughout time. Not all horses with crooked legs gets sidebones, but it definitely can get worse. She is currently not fit for riding, because of lameness and At the moment we are just trying to get her comfortable enough to move around in the field. A shoe where the horse can roll over in the direction she feels comfortable in. Especially while turning. And also make it more comfortable in the landing and loading phase.

Make sure your horse’s withers have room to breathe. Both the top AND the sides of the withers. This protects the spine, it protects muscles that shouldn’t be weight bearing, and it allows the shoulders room to move.

This is a fabulous way to show the graduation of the head plate size! You can clearly see that the lower head plate has a narrower width than the one at the top.
You can see it perfectly by eye from above and side by side. But in a photo, this is definitely the best way.

No saddle can fit every horse. Just like we buy different shapes and sizes of shoes to fit and support our feet, horses need to have a saddle that fits properly WITHOUT the aid of any pad. If the saddle doesn't fit, using additional padding is not always the solution. Please follow these two accounts for more amazing information!!

For the other photos mentioned below, please follow and visit

The first 2 photos are narrower from the bottom, working wider upwards.
3rd and 4th photos are wider from the bottom, working narrower upwards.
The last photo is the difference in height of the widest to narrowest.. look at the level. Which one do you think is wider! 🤔

By the way, all these trees are absolutely perfect. They are straight and level when put on a level surface. The rivets are all correct and in good order. The rails and Stirrup bars are even on everyone. The cantel is attached and perfectly aligned

Many people know I drive like a lunatic. They are not wrong. I love speed. I love the power I feel from the car. But.... Many areas where people ride do not have street lights. "Cars and horses do not mix". Tonight I almost hit a horse in Janadria. The worker WAS wearing a reflective vest. The horse was not. I did not see them because the worker was on the inside of the street and the horse covered the worker from my view. ✴️✴️✴️ The worker should always walk on the street side. Riders who buy vests should choose a vest with many stripes ✴️✴️✴️please note!!! It is the stripes which show reflection, NOT the 🟡 or orange 🧡 colour. Choose items with a lot of the silver 🪞 reflective material!! Please swipe through LL the images to get ideas. Some are available online for good prices delivered to your door. 🪞🪞YOUR LIFE, AND YOUR HORSE, ARE WORTH MORE THAT 30£ 👍👍👍

Posted • Have you ever been told to not allow a hot, sweaty horse to drink cold water because it could lead to colic, founder or tie up?

This notion is actually a myth, and a dangerous one too, because it could lead to dehydration and very serious (and real) consequences. A sweaty, hardworking horse needs to be rehydrated without delay (i.e. don’t wait for the horse to cool down first).

The key, however, is to know how much water to allow at one time — because of the equine stomach’s relatively small capacity, offer small amounts of water every 20 minutes until the horse drinks his fill rather than letting the animal drink it all at once.

Remember that water is the most vital nutrient for a horse. A horse’s daily water requirements are influenced by many factors, but the average idle 1,100-pound horse in a cool environment will drink 6 to 10 gallons of water per day. That amount may easily double or triple in a hot environment! Therefore, it goes without saying that providing cool, clean water to your horses at all times is of paramount importance.
