When our volunteer, Penny, visited Theea’s recently, she knew she was going to love every single animal there. However, there was always going to be one who stole her heart.
This was before she learnt his heartbreaking story, which made her love and adore him even more.
Below is Max’s story, and Penny’s experience with him.
‘I visited every individual animal at Theea’s.
I loved them all. But the one soul that makes me emotional even thinking of him, is Max.
Max is around 3-4 years old. He is a former chain dog. He spent at least 2 years of his life with a tight chain around his neck, and only 1 metre to pace with no human or dog interaction.
When his former owner decided he no longer wanted Max, he stopped feeding him and hoped Max would die of starvation.
Max wasn’t far off death when Theea found him, he was emaciated and frightened. Theea spoke to his owner who agreed to surrender Max. Theea was able to take him back to her shelter to rehabilitate and care for him.
I would never, ever have known the horrors he’d endured based off his character.
I vividly remember being in his kennel and trying to play with Max and his friend.
I felt him looking at me. I turned and saw him gazing into my eyes with so much kindness behind them. There was just something different about his soul.
His tail wagged with each cuddle and kiss and I had tears in my eyes from that connection alone.
When I told Theea about this, she explained his story, and I cried again. I couldn’t believe it.
Max’s story is truly inspiring. I find myself toying with the idea of adopting him sometimes, but with my commitment of going to Romania for long stints of time, I feel this wouldn’t be fair on him in the long haul.
I can only hope one day Max is adopted and knows endless cuddles and kisses, just as he would love to reciprocate back to his human.
