The American Bulldog is a direct descendant of the original, athletic working bulldogs brought to North America by early English settlers. While early iterations were used in the cruel blood sport of bull-baiting, modern American Bulldogs evolved into versatile catch-dogs and farm guardians rather than baiting specialists.
Before becoming the modern show breed, the foundational Bulldog was bred for the brutal medieval sport of bull-baiting in England, which involved tethering a bull to a stake for dogs to harass.

Southern Survival: The modern American Bulldog was preserved in the Southeastern United States by isolated farmers who valued the dog’s relentless drive, agility, and protective instincts.
Modern Lines: All modern American Bulldogs trace their roots to specific strains developed in the Deep South—primarily the Scott (performance) and Johnson (classic/bully) bloodlines.
