For those who think or say that breeding is easy!
On Friday, I left for work relaxed, knowing that Daisy was at home resting peacefully on day 61 after mating. She had eaten everything and showed no signs that birth was near. No heavy breathing, no restlessness, nothing. When I got home, I found two puppies crawling around her and one still inside the placenta. What followed were tens of minutes of resuscitation and several hours of stress, uncertainty, excitement, and helplessness. I did everything I knew and could until one of the puppies got stuck in the birth canal.
We rushed to the vet, and thankfully we managed to get him out safely, so we decided to let her continue her heroic mom duties. With a little help, she gave birth to the remaining puppies as well. Unfortunately, not all of them made it, no matter how hard we tried to resuscitate them. It’s hard to put into words all the emotions from those hours from the panic of knowing she was scheduled for a C-section on Sunday and suddenly decided to give birth earlier without showing any signs, to the fear that I wouldn’t be able to help her, to the hope I had for each puppy, and the heartbreak and helplessness when I realized that despite all our efforts, we couldn’t save them all.
And now we have 5 wonderful puppies from super mom Daisy, 4 thriving every day and one little girl who can’t feed on her own, so we’re still doing our best and hope that she’ll be fine. We’re bottle-feeding her constantly and hoping for the best, even though she’s still losing weight constantly, so any advice is more than welcome.
