⚠️ Alert – Leptospirosis in dogs 🐶

Since 2025, an increase in leptospirosis cases in dogs has been reported in the Lagos and Portimão areas. This disease can also be transmitted to humans, so prevention is very important.

To protect your pet:
✔️ Keep vaccinations up to date
✔️ Avoid stagnant water, puddles, and flooded areas
✔️ Reinforce rodent control
✔️ Contact your veterinarian if your dog shows signs such as fever, vomiting, lethargy, or jaundice.

Prevention helps protect both animal and public health. 🐾

Heartworm (Dirofilariosis) is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease in dogs, caused by a parasitic worm (Dirofilaria immitis). The larvae are transmitted through mosquito bites, and over time, the worms develop and live inside the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. This can lead to severe heart and respiratory problems if left untreated.
Here in the Algarve, the climate is warm and humid, creating the perfect environment for mosquitoes. This makes heartworm a real risk for dogs living in or visiting the region. The good news is that heartworm can be prevented. There are several effective options:
- Tablets or spot-on treatments – These stop larvae from developing into adult worms.
- Vaccination – Provides long-lasting protection against heartworm with a single dose, ideal for owners who prefer a simpler solution.
- Mosquito control – Reducing exposure to mosquitoes (especially at dawn and dusk) adds an extra layer of protection.
Regular prevention is much easier and safer than treating an established infection, which can be very difficult and risky. At Naturavet, we recommend discussing the best prevention plan for your dog based on their lifestyle and needs.

🦟 Leishmaniosis in Dogs – How to Protect Your Best Friend

Leishmaniosis is a serious disease, transmitted by the bite of the phlebotomine sandfly. It is especially common in southern Europe, including the Algarve. Because it can cause lifelong health problems, affecting the skin, eyes, kidneys and general wellbeing. Prevention is always better than treatment.

At Naturavet, we care about keeping your pets safe. Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce the risk of infection:

Vaccination – Helps strengthen your dog’s immune system so it can fight off the parasite if exposed. It doesn’t replace other preventive measures, but it is an important layer of protection.

Repellent Collars – Special collars release active ingredients that repel and kill sandflies before they can bite. They usually work for several months and are easy to use.

Spot-on Pipettes – Applied to the skin (usually on the neck and back), pipettes protect against sandflies and other parasites such as fleas and ticks. Protection generally lasts 3–4 weeks.

Oral Tablets (Pills) – Some tablets protect against external parasites, including sandflies, offering an alternative to collars and pipettes.

👉 The best protection often comes from combining methods, for example, vaccination + collar, or pipette + vaccination, depending on your dog’s lifestyle and health.

Dog Registration in Portugal – What You Need to Know

In Portugal, it is mandatory for all dogs to be:
✅ Microchipped – placed by a vet, linked to your details.
✅ Registered in SIAC (national pet database).
✅ Registered at your local Junta de Freguesia.

Not registering your dog can lead to fines, but more importantly, it can put your dog at risk.

If your dog gets lost, a microchip is the fastest way to bring them home. Registration proves ownership in case of disputes. Helps control abandonment and ensures every dog has an identity.

At Naturavet (Lagos, Algarve), we can check if your dog’s microchip and registration are up to date and guide you through the process.

Em Portugal, é obrigatório que todos os cães estejam:
