🍃Horta's European tour🍃
🐽 Over the next three months, caretaker António Vaz Pato will be our correspondent across European lands. Along his journey— partly funded with support from the — visits are planned to regenerative projects, both urban and rural, in Italy, Czechia, Poland, Germany, Belgium, and France.
🫛 Last week, it was time to head toward Spinazzola, Italy. In the heart of rural Puglia, the Casalina project has, since the pandemic, been working to develop regenerative agriculture initiatives on lands from the old Reforma Fondiaria.
However, from the outset, the group of young people leading the project mainly sought solutions to combat the precarity and hardship faced by the vast majority of migrants working in the surrounding agricultural fields. The undignified living and working conditions endured by these workers fuel a system of exploitation that is widely tolerated and often silenced. 🫂
At the moment, Casalina is investing in a long-term project to test the benefits of syntropic agriculture. The project aims to collect data and monitor the development of a Mediterranean syntropic system linked to the production of a perennial cereal crop (kernza).
🍷It was a privilege to have the company and enthusiasm of the casalinos. Through them, we gained a deeper understanding of the landscape and Casalina’s role within this complex territory. Along the way, there was still time to help them start a stone composting station, propagate and plant seedlings, sow, w**d, care for the space… and even prepare a fermented drink with elderflowers!
Thank you, Casalina. We are connected.
