“Doctor, do you believe in natural medicine?”
Absolutely.
Some of my favorite oncology drugs are derived from flowers, soil bacteria, mushrooms, and even E. coli.
Vincristine and vinblastine come from the Madagascar periwinkle plant. Doxorubicin was originally isolated from soil bacteria. L-asparaginase is derived from E. coli. Even some nutraceuticals we use integratively, such as Avmaquin and I’m-Yunity, originate from plant and mushroom compounds.
The point of this post isn’t that supplements are bad.
The point is that natural does not automatically mean safe, effective, or appropriate for every patient.
The difference between a supplement and a cancer treatment isn’t whether it came from nature.
The difference is:
- Research
- Clinical trials
- Dose calculation
- Safety monitoring
- Evidence
