Lecture "Waking up on the wrong side of the dog bed: Mood, motivation, & learning"
As professionals in animal learning, we are increasingly confident with using principles of classical and operant conditioning to help animals achieve their goals.
However, many dog behaviours, such as reactivity, may not always be easily understandable from a simplistic account of a history of consequences.
In this talk, I will explore the concept of "mood" as a Motivating Operation (MO) and the industry term, "trigger stacking," and its effects on subsequent learning and stress resilience.
I will present data from 2 experiments in our laboratory that have attempted to quantify "mood" in pet dogs. We will end with a discussion of how, and whether it is possible, to incorporate a mood assessment into training as well as identify needed future directions for supporting dogs.Dr Alexandra (Sasha) Protopopova, PhD, CAAB, is an assistant professor in the Animal Welfare Program at the University of British Columbia and the NSERC/ BC SPCA Industrial Research Chair in Animal Welfare. Sasha’s research aims are to learn more about dogs, improve animal shelter practices, and improve companion animal welfare in shelters, pet homes, and in assistance roles – all within a One Welfare framework. Recently, Sasha has been shifting her research focus on connecting climate change and other societal issues to companion animal welfare. Sasha earned an MSc and a PhD in Behavior Analysis from the University of Florida with Drs. Clive
Wynne and Brian Iwata. She spends her days conducting research, teaching university classes in animal learning and animal sheltering, going hiking, and cuddling dogs. https://wmw.upwr.edu.pl/en/events/lecture-by-dr-alexandra-protopopova-waking-up-on-the-wrong-side-of-the-dog-bed--mood--motivation--learning-8.html
