📌 E-line artefacts

👉 The presence of air in the subcutaneous tissue generates the same types of artefacts that are observed during lung ultrasound examination:
☑️horizontal A-line artefacts
and/or
☑️ vertical B-line artefacts, which in the case of subcutaneous emphysema are called E-line artefacts (E for emphysema)

👉E-line artefacts, unlike B-line artifacts, begin at the level of the chest, not the pleura. E-line artifacts are well-defined and also cause the A-line to be invisible, so they can be confused with true B-lines.

👉 The presence of air in the subcutaneous tissue prevents imaging of deeper tissues

📌Z and I-line artefacts

👉they are vertical hyperechogenic comet tail artifacts
👉similar to lines B arise from pleura line, however are much shorter
👉Z-lines are usually slightly longer than I-lines
👉currently have no clinical significance
👉I-line artifacts look like needles

👉C-line artefacts are vertical hyperechogenic lines type „comet tail”
👉similar to lines B but they do not arise from the pleural line but from the top of the lesion - consolidation area or pleural-related focal lesion

📌B-line artefacts

👉B- line artefacts (ultrasound lung comets) are defined as a vertical artefacts that arise from the pleural line
👉extend to the depth of the image without decreasing in intensity move synchronously with lung sliding
👉do not appear together with lines A
👉they arise due to the presence of a small amount of fluid between the pleura and the presence of a surfactant in the alveoli
👉B-lines (up to two) can be seen in normal lungs
👉they are considered significant if three or more B-lines are seen in a single image between two ribs

📌 Sliding sign

👉Lung sliding is a to-and-fro movement between two pleural layers (at the pleural line) that occurs during respiration

👉 A-line artefacts without sliding may indicate:
- free air in the pleural space (pneumothorax)
- fluid in the pleural space (pleural effusion)
- pleural adhesions - when the pleura are firmly adherent to each other (pneumonia complicated by adhesions)
