Now when we know what does it mean for a dog or a cat to be in heat and the symptoms of the fertility period, it is time to have a closer look at the different periods of the heat cycles of cats.

- Proestrus - This is the moment when the female cat (otherwise called the queen.. duuh…), unless spayed or pregnant, will start attracting male cats. Proestrus lasts 1-2 days.

- Estrus - The cat is in heat. It is also known as aestrus, oestrus or estrous. Estrus normally lasts up to a week. During these days, your cat will be receptive to mating and will exhibit strong heat signs. You can clearly identify the different periods - during Proestrus your cat will show almost no heat symptoms. When things get really hot, the hormone production will raise and your cat will start ovulating. Cats normally mate several times during this stage. Did you knew that the cat’s kittens from one pregnancy can have several different fathers?

- Interestus - If the cat doesn’t mate, she will get in Interestus. During this period, cats normally don’t exhibit any symptoms of heat. Within 3 days or a maximum of 3 weeks, the cat will go to Estrus again.. These three cycles mark the mating season, which may continue year round or only from February to October, depending on the specie.

- Anestrus - This is the dormant period of a cat’s reproductive system. She won’t experience any estrus activity. Remember that the mating season lasts normally from spring to fall, because the daylight stimulate the feline’s hormones. Sometimes artificial lights can also retrigger the heat cycles!

Now when we know what does it mean for a dog or a cat to be in heat and the symptoms of the fertility period, it is time to have a closer look at the different periods of the heat cycles of dogs.

- Proestrus - This stage lasts from 3 to 17 days, bust most of the dogs stay around 9 days in Proestrus. The first and most obvious sign of this stage is the swelling of the v***a. Other symptoms could be a drastic personality change, appetite change or tail tucking.
- Estrus - This stage is also typically 3 to 21 days, 9 days on average. This is the actual heat cycle when the dog is fertile and when the ovaries begin to release eggs for fertilisation. During Estrus, the female dogs will be willing to accept male company. They will want to go more outside and flirt with male dogs. The female dog’s v***a is also softening during this stage
- Diestrus - This stage lasts 60 to 90 days when the dog is no longer fertile. If the dog is pregnant, the diestrus lasts from the end of estrus until the birth of the puppies. During this stage, the swelling of the v***a is gradually disappearing and the dog is no longer interested in flirting.
- Anestrus - This is the resting stage. This longest period of the heat cycle can last from 100 to 150 days and ends with the beginning of Proestrus.

Ostatnio rozmawialiśmy o znakach i objawach, które mogą wskazywać, że Twój kot jest w rui. A co z psami?

W rui samice są bardziej wrażliwe. Fascynujące jest to, że często dzieli się je na dwie kategorie - niektóre z nich dobrze znoszą okres rui, a inne tak naprawdę nie wiedzą, jak zareagować. Oznacza to, że zawsze stają się bardziej wyczulone, leniwe, aktywne lub pobudzone. Innym częstym objawem jest to, że siusiają częściej i nieco w nieco innej pozycji. Niektóre suczki nawet uciekają z domu, aby ćwiczyć ukrywanie się przed samcami!

Samce psów w rui również drastycznie zmieniają swoje zachowanie. Wydaje się, że w tych cyklach celem ich życia staje się potrzeba krycia. Mogą nawet ignorować jedzenie i wodę w poszukiwaniu satysfakcji z ich pierwotnego instynktu. Bądź bardzo ostrożny, kiedy wyprowadzasz je na zewnątrz w tych okresach! Jeśli wyczują kolejną suczkę w rui, nie będzie na świecie ogrodzenia, które będzie w stanie je powstrzymać.

Last time we talked about the sings and symptoms which can show you that your cat is in heat. But what about dogs?

When in heat, female dogs tend to get more affectionate. It is fascinating that they are often divided in two categories - some of them handle well the heat period and some don’t really know how to react. This mean that they always get more affectionate, but also lazier or more active and aroused. Another common sign is that they urinate much more often and raise their legs slightly differently when doing so. Some female dogs even run away from home to practice hiding from male dogs!

Male dogs in heat are also changing drastically their behaviour. It seems that, during these cycles, the goal of their life becomes the need to mate. They can even ignore food and water in the search of satisfaction of their primal instinct. Be really careful when you walk them outside during these periods! If they sense another female dog in heat, there won’t be a fence in the world that will be able to keep them away.

Zabawne dźwięki, takie jak pożądliwe miauczenie i jęczenie, czołganie się nisko, namiętne i delikatne ocieranie się o Ciebie lub jakiekolwiek meble w domu, częste pielęgnowanie intymnych części ciała, pozycja godowa oraz utrata apetytu to ogólne zachowania kota w cyklu. Bądź ostrożny! Niektóre koty mogą nawet próbować uciec z domu, aby znaleźć odpowiedniego partnera do krycia.

Last time we talked about the importance of understanding the fertility cycles of your dogs and cats. We need to know more about the ‘’heat’’ periods of our beloved pets so we can react to this important moment of the life of a healthy animal.

Today we want to talk about the signs and symptoms that tell you that your cat is in heat. Generally speaking, during these periods your cat will get more restless and affectionate to her surroundings. Funny sounds such as lustful meowing and moaning, low crawling, passionate and gentle rubbing up against you or any furniture at home, frequent grooming of their private parts, mating position (behind high up and tail gently on the side) and lost of appetite are the general symptoms of a cat in cycle. Be careful! Some cats may even try to escape your home to search for an appropriate mating partner.

W miarę jak dni powoli się wydłużają, a temperatura za oknem rośnie, zbliża się okres „rui” u naszych ukochanych zwierzaków. Może się to zdarzyć już w lutym lub dopiero w październiku. Mówiąc najprościej, termin ten oznacza, że Twój pies lub kot wchodzi w okres płodności. Jeśli twoje zwierzęta nie są wykastrowane, ich pierwotne instynkty zmuszą je do podjęcia próby kopulacji z każdym zwierzęciem płci przeciwnej w pobliżu. Ale jakie dokładnie są etapy cyklu Twoich psów i kotów? Jak wpływają na ich zachowanie? Ważne jest posiadanie tych informacji, abyśmy mogli przewidzieć ten ważny moment w życiu naszego pupila i kontrolować lub warunkować jego potencjalną ciążę. As days start to slowly grow longer and the weather gets warmer, our beloved pets are getting ’’in heat’’. This can happen as early as February and as late as October. Simply said, this term means that your dog or cat is entering its fertility periods. If your pets are not neutered, their primal instincts will force them to try to mate with any and every animal from the opposite s*x nearby. But what exactly are the different stages of the heating cycle of your dogs and cats? How will they affect their behaviour? It is important that we know more about the subject so we can anticipate this important moment of the life of a healthy pet and control or condition any potential pregnancy. In our new series of posts we will talk more about it and give you the knowledge every responsible owner needs.

Niedawne badanie przeprowadzone w Wielkiej Brytanii przez naukowców z uniwersytetów w Yorku i Lincoln pokazuje, że zdrowie psychiczne ludzi jest wzmacniane przez więź emocjonalną dzieloną ze zwierzętami. W rzeczywistości 90% respondentów potwierdziło, że ich zwierzęta pomagają im zachować stabilność emocjonalną podczas długich miesięcy lockdownu. Kolejne 96% zachowało sprawność i aktywność fizyczną dzięki swoim zwierzętom. Miłość, którą dzielimy ze zwierzętami, jest naprawdę niesamowita i cenna.

A recent study conducted in UK by researchers from the Universities of York and Lincoln shows that people’s mental health is reinforced by the emotional bound shared with their pets. In fact, 90% of respondents confirmed that their pets help them stay emotionally stable and overall happy during the long months of lockdown. Another 96% stayed fit and physically active thanks to their pets. The love we share with the animals is truly amazing and precious.

Niższe temperatury i krótsze dni mogą wpływać na apetyt kota. Koty, zwłaszcza te domowe, lubią ciepło i wygodę. Chłodniejsza zima sprawia, że kot spala więcej kalorii, aby utrzymać odpowiednią temperaturę ciała. Ale bądź ostrożny! Czasami koty mogą podstępnie zdobyć znacznie więcej jedzenia, tylko dlatego, że czują się bardziej znudzone i są bardziej leniwe. Chcą czuć się tak jak my, gdy jest zimno - pod ciepłym kocem i otoczeni dużą ilością jedzenia.

Low temperatures and shorter days can affect your cat's appetite. Cats, especially domestic ones, like to always be warm and comfortable. The colder weather during winter makes your cat burn more calories to maintain body temperature. But be careful! Sometimes cats can try to sneakily get much more food just because they feel lazier and bored. They want to be just like us when its cold - under a warm blanket and surrounded by a lot of food.

Ferie zimowe minęły prawie miesiąc temu, ale nasze zwierzaki wciąż są leniwe i senne. Wygląda na to, że nie zgromadziły jeszcze wystarczającej siły, aby zrealizować wszystkie plany i postanowienia na 2021 r. To zupełnie normalne! W rzeczywistości, podobnie jak ludzie, psy polegają na melatoninie, aby regulować swoje cykle snu. Ze względu na mniejszą ilość światła słonecznego zimą szyszynka Twojego psa wytwarza więcej tego hormonu, co powoduje zmianę nastroju i zachowania.

The winter holidays were almost a month ago, but our pets are still feeling kinda lazy and sleepy. It seems like they have yet to gather enough strength to fulfil all their 2021 plans and resolutions. This is completely normal! In fact, same as humans, dogs rely on melatonin to regulate their sleep cycles. Due to less amount of sunlight during winter, your dog’s pineal gland produces more of this hormone, which results in the modified mood and behaviour.

Może ukradł Twoje ulubione skarpetki…, a może po prostu zaopiekował się Twoim ulubionym kocem…. Czy myślisz ze Twój pupil podczas twojej nieobecności zajmuje się tylko swobodnymi biegami i zabawami w domu? Mamy nadzieję, że dobrze ich wyszkoliłeś.
