The clavicle, or collarbone, shows a fascinating contrast between cats and humans. In cats, it is a tiny, free‑floating bone embedded in shoulder muscles, giving them remarkable flexibility. This design allows cats to compress their shoulders to slip through narrow spaces, extend their stride for speed, and absorb shock when leaping down from heights. In humans, however, the clavicle is a large, rigid strut firmly connecting the breastbone to the shoulder blade. It stabilizes the shoulder joint, supports arm strength, and plays a key role in maintaining our upright posture. While this fixed connection provides stability and power, it also limits chest compression—meaning humans can’t squeeze through tight gaps the way cats can.
