Mycosis refers to a fungal infection in humans or animals caused by fungi. These infections can range from mild and superficial to severe and systemic.

Types of Mycosis (5 Major Types):

1. Superficial Mycosis:

Examples: Tinea versicolor, Piedra.

Affects: Skin, hair, outermost layers.

Symptoms: Discolored patches on skin, itching, dandruff-like flakes.

2. Cutaneous Mycosis:

Examples: Ringworm (Tinea), Athlete's foot, Jock itch.

Affects: Skin, hair, nails.

Symptoms: Red, itchy, scaly rashes; nail discoloration or thickening.

3. Subcutaneous Mycosis:

Examples: Sporotrichosis, Chromoblastomycosis.

Affects: Deeper skin layers, subcutaneous tissues.

Symptoms: Nodules, ulcers, localized swelling and infection.

4. Systemic Mycosis (Endemic):

Examples: Histoplasmosis, Blastomycosis, Coccidioidomycosis.

Affects: Internal organs (lungs, liver, etc.).

Symptoms: Cough, fever, weight loss, chest pain, fatigue.

5. Opportunistic Mycosis:

Examples: Candidiasis, Aspergillosis, Mucormycosis.

Affects: Immunocompromised individuals (e.g. HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy).

Symptoms: Vary by site—infections in lungs, blood, brain, mouth, etc.

Symptoms (Generalized):

Skin rashes or lesions

Itching or burning sensation

Discolored nails or skin

Respiratory symptoms (cough, chest pain)

Fever and fatigue (in systemic infections)

Prevention:

Maintain proper hygiene and dry skin.

Avoid sharing personal items (towels, shoes).

Wear protective clothing in contaminated areas.

Control underlying health conditions (e.g. diabetes).

Strengthen immunity through proper diet and lifestyle.

Use antifungal powders or sprays in prone areas.

Treatment:

Topical Antifungals: Clotrimazole, Miconazole (for skin/nail infections).

Oral Antifungals: Fluconazole, Itraconazole, Terbinafine.

IV Antifungals: Amphotericin B, Voriconazole (for systemic infections).

Surgical Intervention: In severe subcutaneous cases.

Supportive Care: Treat underlying conditions, improve immunity.
