The pH of the Dairy Cows specially Close-up Group monitored every week or after a couple of weeks. The normal ph value of urine is above 7 or we can say that urine is slightly alkaline in nature. But for close-up groups the value of urine pH should be slightly acidic ranging between 5.7-6.2.
??
A urine pH that is acidic can activate the parathyroid gland, leading to an increase in parathyroid hormone (PTH) production. Here's a step-by-step explanation of the mechanism:
1. *Acidic urine*: When the urine pH drops below 5.5, it becomes increasingly acidic.
2. *Increased hydrogen ions*: The acidic environment increases the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in the urine.
3. *Activation of renal sensors*: The hydrogen ions bind to specialized sensors in the kidney, called renal sensors, which detect changes in urine pH.
4. *Signaling to the parathyroid gland*: The activated renal sensors send signals to the parathyroid gland, located in the neck, via the bloodstream.
5. *Increased PTH production*: The parathyroid gland responds to the signals by increasing production and secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH).
6. *PTH stimulates calcium release*: PTH stimulates the release of calcium from bone into the bloodstream, which helps to buffer the acidic urine pH.
7. *Increased calcium levels*: The increased calcium levels in the bloodstream help to neutralize the acidic urine pH.
In summary, acidic urine pH activates the parathyroid gland, leading to increased PTH production. So this will help to avoid metabolic disease like milk fever after parturition.
?
If the Urine pH is alkaline, then we can use (Dietary Cation and Anion Difference). This will help in decreasing the urine pH.
Note: Keep monitoring the urine pH while using Negative DCAD because too much acidic urine will cause further complications like hypocalcemia, bone deformities etc
