It is caused by a group of viruses known as the foot-and-mouth disease viruses (FMDV). The disease is characterized by the sudden onset of fever, followed by the development of blisters in the mouth and on the feet. The blisters can make it painful for animals to eat and walk, leading to weight loss, reduced milk production, and reduced fertility. In severe cases, the disease can be fatal.
FMD is highly contagious and can spread quickly through contact with infected animals, their bodily fluids, or contaminated feed, equipment, and clothing. The disease can also be spread through the movement of infected animals or through the transport of contaminated products.
There is no specific treatment for FMD, and infected animals must be isolated and quarantine to prevent the spread of the disease. Control measures, such as vaccination and the strict movement controls, are typically implemented to prevent outbreaks.
