This is Yuji. She is a 10-year-old intact female mixed breed dog.
She was brought into our clinic as a late-night emergency case after she stopped eating and developed bouts of diarrhea mixed with blood. Her handling veterinarian, Dr. Ricky, performed a physical examination during which he observed that Yuji was dehydrated and lethargic. When a sterile swab was inserted into her re**um to collect a sample for fecalysis, it was noted that the stool sample collected was blood-tinged.
An executive panel test was performed to get to the bottom of what was causing her clinical signs. When the results were available, they revealed that she had elevated creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and SDMA (symmetric dimethylarginine). Those results, accompanied by her urinalysis, revealed that she was suffering from stage 2 CKD or chronic kidney disease (based on the IRIS (International Renal Interest Society) staging system).
It was highly recommended that she be admitted to manage her clinical signs.
Thankfully, she responded very well to treatment, which consisted of fluid therapy, parenteral nutrition, correcting the electrolyte imbalance, and treating azotemia.
She has now been discharged back to her loving family.
Although kidney diseases are progressive, it doesn’t mean they can’t be managed to provide a good quality of life. We manage this disease by providing the proper diet, maintenance medications, and closely monitoring the patient's kidney function by doing follow-up blood tests.
