Effect on inbreeding and disadvantage
What is inbreeding?
Inbreeding is the process of mating genetically similar organisms. Successful inbreeding is simply called line-breeding.
Can You Mix Different Breeds of Chickens?
Different breeds of chickens can coexist in what is commonly referred to as a mixed flock. A lot of consideration is needed before you can bring together a variety of chicken breeds. Watch out for the behavior of some chickens to know how to group them. Some birds can be docile and calm while most may show dominant personalities.
Once you take this factor into consideration, you may not proceed with combining two different breeds with different characteristics. If you do, expect a lot of conflicts within your mixed flock.
There are three sorts of breeding:
Cross-breeding: individuals of different breeds or lines are used to mate.
Pure breeding: the same breed or lines are used to mate.
Inbreeding: two close relatives mate. The closer the relation, the higher the inbreeding.
Can you breed brother and sister Gamefowl?
In gamefowl breeding, the types of sibling mating that are commonly discussed in lectures and seminars are the mating between full siblings or full brother to sister and the mating between half siblings.
Disorders From Inbreeding
Reduced fertility.
Reduced birth rate.
Higher infant and child mortality.
Smaller adult size.
Reduced immune function.
Increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Increased facial asymmetry.
Increased risk of genetic disorders.
Do chickens have problems with inbreeding?
Using within-line selection on a small poultry population is expected to increase the rate of inbreeding in the population, and the increase in rate of inbreeding may lead to undesirable effects such as a decline in performance and loss of vigor.
