Not every handler is a trainer, and not every trainer knows how to train handlers or build teams.

Let's challenge the assumption that good dog trainers automatically produce good handlers.

Let's shed a light on a blind spot in many training programs: handler development.

Let's push people to reflect on whether their program is truly team-based or still dog-centric.

EBODT Spin
Effects-Based training requires team competence.
- Handlers must learn decision-making, strategy, and situational awareness...skills that go far beyond “do what the trainer says.” This is what saves them when the training isn't there. They learn that NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE THEM during the search. It's them and their dog.

- Trainers must evolve: training a dog is not the same as training a team. If you just gave me the leash I could do it. Now, teach someone how to do it.
It's impressive that you can do it to be sure.

“Those that can, do. But showing someone else how to do it? That takes more; understanding, wisdom, patience, and skills not every trainer has.”

Training dogs is one thing. Training handlers is another. And training handlers to train their own dogs? That’s a whole different level of skill.

We don’t just need dog trainers. We need handler trainers. Because the leash is only as good as the hands that hold it.

Dog training ≠ team training.
If 2/3 of search failures come from the handler, why are we still acting like it’s all about the dog?

Odor detection is a team sport, and teams rise or fall to the level of their training. That's why I say don't trust your dog, how's your training? The mantra should be "TRUST YOUR TRAINING!" Love your dog. Wanna honor them and show them you love them, train them.

We need training on three levels. Dog, Handler, and Teams.

Dog training isn’t automatically handler training.
Handler development requires clarity, coaching, and accountability, not just reps with the dog. We can send handlers how and have them do reps.

The best teams don’t just do the work. They learn the 5W's and an H.

Good trainers bring out the dog’s potential. Great trainers unlock the handler’s. The best trainers bring both together as a Team.

Ask yourselves, Are we training the whole team, or just half of it?

Teaching is doing at the highest level. It takes clarity, patience, timing, and the ability to shape not just one performance, but the performance of others. Doing proves you can. Teaching proves you understand.

Doing shows skill. Teaching shows mastery. If you think teaching is for those who ‘can’t,’ you’ve never tried to turn a dog-and-handler into a true Team.

There's more to this game than dog training.
