🚨 PYOMETRA IN DOGS – A SILENT KILLER 🚨
Meet Zoe, our VetMedica patient 🐶❤️
She came to us with pyometra — a dangerous infection of the uterus. Thanks to the VetMedica team and an emergency ovariohysterectomy surgery, Zoe is now safe and recovering with her loving family. 💪🐾
💉 What is Pyometra?
Pyometra happens when the womb fills with pus due to bacteria, usually E. coli. Without treatment, it can cause kidney failure, septicemia, and even death.
🐾 Why Does It Happen?
✅ Usually a few weeks after heat due to hormonal changes
✅ More common in older, unspayed females
✅ Can happen at any age in unspayed dogs
⚠️ Signs to Watch For:
Lethargy / weakness
Loss of appetite
Drinking and urinating more
Vomiting
Swollen abdomen
Vaginal discharge (may be absent in “closed” pyometra)
🏥 Treatment:
Emergency spay surgery to remove the infected uterus & ovaries
IV fluids & antibiotics
Higher risk than a normal spay because the uterus can rupture
💡 Prevention:
Spay your dog — the ONLY 100% way to prevent pyometra
1 in 4 unspayed older females will develop it
❤️ Zoe’s story is a reminder: If your unspayed female dog shows these signs, seek veterinary care immediately. Acting fast can save her life.
