📌Post for awareness: Dumb Cane toxicity in dogs ⚠️‼️
A simple houseplant can be very toxic to your pets. Meet Zach; his owner rushed him to the clinic for an emergency. According to his owner, he accidentally chewed a houseplant. Upon interview with the owner, the plant was identified as "Dumb Cane." 🪴
Dumb cane is a very common houseplant here in the Philippines. It is believed to have air purification benefits and has a very aesthetic appearance, but behind that very aesthetic appearance, it carries a very toxic sap. The sap, if ingested, can cause swelling of the mouth, tongue, and throat that can lead to speechlessness; hence the name "dumb cane." It can also cause severe drooling and pain and burning sensations of the swollen mouth, tongue, and throat. If not treated immediately, it can also cause difficulty of breathing and even death.
After identifying the plant, Zach was able to received immediate medical care and treatment and is now doing very well. 🐾🤗
As fur-parents let us be vigilant with our fur babies because sometimes they can be curiously stubborn. 🐾
