Stray (2020): Istanbul’s Street Dogs and the Quiet Dignity of Survival

Elizabeth Lo’s Stray is a contemplative, ground-level portrait of Istanbul seen through the eyes—and footsteps—of its street dogs. Eschewing conventional narration and sentimentality, the film offers a raw, lyrical glimpse into the lives of the city’s forgotten souls, both human and canine.

At the heart of the story is Zeytin, a graceful and self-reliant dog who leads viewers through the city’s corners and contradictions. Alongside her companions Nazar and Kartal, Zeytin becomes our guide through bustling avenues, quiet ruins, and the liminal spaces where the overlooked exist. Their journey reveals not just how dogs survive on the margins, but how they observe, adapt, and even belong in ways that feel profoundly human.

What sets Stray apart is Turkey’s distinct relationship with its stray dogs—protected by law and allowed to roam freely. This unique social contract forms a poignant backdrop to the film, as dogs drift through lives marked by both care and neglect. Lo’s camera watches without intruding, capturing fleeting gestures of empathy between animals and people, and the silent resilience shared by both.

Devoid of narration or imposed narrative, the film unfolds like a visual poem—allowing space for reflection, emotion, and discovery. It’s an ode to those who live without walls or labels, whose presence is often felt but rarely acknowledged.

Ultimately, Stray isn’t just about dogs—it’s about the overlooked, the enduring, and the simple beauty of being seen.

MAN WHO BLUDGEONED STRAY CAT TO DEATH GOES INTO HIDING; LOCATED AND ARRESTED BY POLICE

A disturbing case of animal cruelty is now moving forward thanks to the courage of a concerned citizen, Celine, who is standing with PAWS for justice. Celine filed a case alongside PAWS just this March against her neighbor, Keyvic, for the alleged brutal killing of a beloved stray cat named Puti. Puti, a gentle and friendly cat, was known to wait for Celine’s return home from work each and every day. When Puti failed to show up as usual, Celine became alarmed.

Upon reviewing CCTV footage, she was devastated to discover that it had caught the moment when Keyvic had viciously struck Puti with a heavy metal object as the cat innocently walked along the sidewalk. The footage showed Puti convulsing and passing shortly after the blow, and Keyvic then callously trying to sweep her away and disposing of her body in a black trash bag. Puti left behind three young kittens.

Celine immediately sought justice and reached out to PAWS for assistance in filing formal charges against her neighbor. Following the case filing, Keyvic reportedly attempted to convince Celine to drop the charges and subsequently went into hiding, but he was soon tracked down and arrested by authorities.

Celine has remained resolute in her pursuit of justice for Puti, saying she will not back down until accountability is served.

ANIMAL CRUELTY IS A CRIME, AND YOU CANNOT RUN FROM JUSTICE.

If you witness animal cruelty, please speak up. You may be the only voice these defenseless beings have. No animal deserves to suffer, let alone die at the hands of violence.

PAWS is always committed to supporting brave individuals willing to stand up against cruelty. If you need legal assistance for an animal cruelty case, please visit paws.org.ph/prosecution

Rest in peace, Puti. Your life mattered, and we are fighting with Celine to ensure that justice is served for you and for all the innocent victims of animal cruelty.
