Osteopenia in a kitten.

Kitten suffered from a low fall and suffered lameness and pain from palpated limb. At first, i suspect radiographic beam projection, kvp-mAs and patient movement was causing the blurring or thin walled cortices creating an almost softer bone density hue.

Repeat radiographs with a closer, more focused collimation made no difference with the structure of the long bones. It is osteopenia with fragile incomplete bone fractures along the midproximal bone shaft of the left femur and the left middistal tibia.

Osteomalacia (rickets) is a bone loss due to faulty mineralization of an osteoid. This can be caused by vitamin D deficiency or renal tubular disease (ie. Fanconi syndrome). Bone is soft but orthopedic clinical signs often absent in dogs and cats. Clinical signs include weakness, lethargy, pain and lameness (taken from Muhlbauer, MC and SK Kneller, Radiography of the Dog and Cat: Guide to Making and Interpreting Radiographs).

A referral case of a black shih tzu puppy accidentally stepped on the leg area. Thanks, doc anne mercado for the referral.

It is difficult to see the fracture on an analog radiograph due to inaccurate kilovoltaging with time and developer mixture which should be frequently adjusted.

Orthogonal views (two views, cranio-caudal and lateral views) are a must to assess the direction of the fracture. The first view supports the second view in establishing the fracture diagnosis.

Here, the fracture is seen extending from the posterior midproximal tibia running to the cranial border. The craniocaudal view shows a Y-shaped fracture line running from the medial midproximal tibia to the midline of the bone. Fortunately, the fibula is left intact.

Since the bones are still attached, only a plastercast was placed and repeat radiographs will be done two weeks from cast placement for immobilization so that bones ramain intact.

A collar bell or a light was also recommended to be placed on the neck of this furbaby that can produce sound or illumination so that she can still be seen or heard during blackouts and at night...

Patient will be referred back after this case.

Radiology was not my favorite subject.... (sorry doc Cesar Bernardino, hirap talaga subject... hehehe. Thanks for teaching us and incorporating the skill very patiently).

It was one of the most difficult subjects during college. Seventeen years later, my practice needs reading radiographs that i was forced to take a radiology course.

Diagnostic imaging is a discipline really needed by veterinarians especially in small animal practice.

I didnt expect colleagues from around the country would seek my advise on their cases that we need to study and understand their cases together.

With an xray that is an analog, it was very difficult to read like seeking ghosts inside the film. Repeat radiographs are frequently done. I was pressured. Pressured on myself hungry for accuracy for diagnosis.

Until today, we have upgraded to Digital Imaging, first in Region 2. Thanks to Brodlie Medical Systems, we now have Aero. Aero is a digital imaging system performing highly diagnostic radiographs for the veterinary practitioner. With added skills of patient positioning, we are able to input high quality radiographs. (Positioning is very important in taking radiographs and only veterinary personnel can do this.)

Even with the presence of good performing machines, without a brain that studies them would render these useless. That is why I enrolled at international schools online to learn the meaning of accuracy.

Thank you Lord and may God give us strength in the craft He intended us to use.

He is our rockstar! Touch my butt!

Sixty hours post-anastomosis surgery. Still on liquid diet... and doing his favorite past time - hu***ng. 'Feels-like-nothing-happened' mood. But, i'm confiscating your toy!

You're going home in a few days, but not today. You have to stay with us first to make sure your intestinal attachments won't burst.

Get well soon, buddy!

Be careful in choosing your pet's toys.

A patient came in with 2 days vomiting, active and hu***ng. Only drinks water. Presenting food seem to be interesting to him but he doesn't have the urge for prehension.

He was placed on fluids and antibiotics and antiemetic and observed for the next 12 hours. By midnight, a dilute brick red vomit with a foul stench was noticed.

By morning, he farted a foul smelling gas. Radiographs were made and a metallic wire-like density and a curly radiopaque pattern was found. The location was confirmed with ultrasound. The parents were alerted for a surgery.

The location: distal duodenum. A necrotic dilated intestine containing a hard material. About a foot of the intestine was removed and anastomosis was done.

Uncovering the necrotized intestine, we found his toy. A curvilinear piece when attached forms a flower attached to a wire and a ribbon.

He's on the path to recovery. Thanks to my colleague Dr. Kristine Relatores - HiPets, Quezon City for assisting me patiently online to accomplish this surgery.

He is hu***ng again as if nothing have happened...

Helping each other establish a diagnosis.

With Dr. Christine H. Estacio of Petformance Veterinary Clinic of Kawit, Cavite and Dr. Kristine Relatores of HiPets, Quezon City scrutinizing their highly detailed radiographs in search for pathologic findings.

A series of modalities available such as radiographs and ultrasound together with laboratory work have been done to reach an accurate diagnosis. This is the importance of clinical diagnostics. Looking into the numbers, looking at what is inside the body for clues... veterinarians need these tools to identify proper treatments and skills are needed to do this.

Thanks for sending me radiographs to read and sharing me a part of your case, colleagues! Thank you zoom! We can just meet virtually and discuss!

This persistent leakage of material from a past castration years ago has caused him this repeated infection.

Ultrasound shows these 2 anechoic lines on small parts on the subscrotal region.

Upon incision, two non-absorbable knots popped out and were extracted. The blue colors and thickness reveal it to be a skein thread, the one used for cross stitch.
