Scientists just found an alien-like predator in the deep Pacific — and what they named it says everything.

It is the ghostly predator of the darkness.

Dulcibella camanchaca, a crustacean discovered in the Atacama Trench, is the first large, fast-swimming predatory amphipod identified at such extreme depths.

This eerie white species uses raptorial limbs to hunt smaller amphipods in a realm where food is scarce and survival is extreme. Its presence defies expectations of trench life, where most known amphipods are sluggish scavengers.

Even more remarkable, this find not only marks a new species but a new genus entirely — Dulcibella — named in a literary nod to Don Quixote.

The species name, camanchaca, meaning “darkness” in regional Indigenous languages, pays homage to the pitch-black world it prowls. Scientists emphasize that the Atacama Trench may be a hotspot for unique life forms, with this discovery showcasing just a fraction of its biodiversity. As deep-ocean exploration expands, so too does our understanding of Earth’s most alien environments—and what they might teach us about life beyond it.
