What is Pyometra?
Pyometra is a uterine infection that causes pus to accumulate within the uterus. This infection is most common in unspayed intact cats and dogs between middle-aged to older age groups.
The condition is caused by hormonal changes in our pet's reproductive system. Following each heat cycle, the uterine lining thickens in preparation for pregnancy. If our pet does not become pregnant, the lining may not be expelled properly, allowing bacteria to enter the uterus and cause an infection.
Pyometra is a severe condition that can be fatal if not treated immediately. The sooner your pet is treated, the higher their chances of survival.
Common symptoms of Pyometra:
- Vaginal discharge
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting
- Increased thirst and urination
- Distended/painful abdomen
- Panting
If your cat or dog is not spayed and you notice the symptoms listed above, seek veterinary help immediately.
