Salt is the enemy.
To be specific, too much salt is the nemesis of the kidney
All processed food have fairly elevated salt content.
Treats, most specially dried treats have significant amount of salt.
Processed meat like sausages are salt laden.
So be careful in choosing what we feed our fur babies.
Do not overfeed if ever you use the above ingredients. Practice moderation.
Here is how salt ruins the body of our precious fur baby.
Excess Salt increases water retention inside the body. The function of the kidney (as a primary pump for fluid balance homoestasis) is to remove the excess fluids (and toxins).
But if there is just too much fluid retention because of excess salt in the diet, the kidney ( as a pump) will eventually wear and tear and later on breakdown. It will result in kidney failure (CKD).
Note : infectious cases of kidney disease will be discussed on future post. Our focus on this post is the nutritional variable as one of the leading causes of CKD and kidney failure.
With too much fluid retention in the body due to excess salt intake, the adrenal glands will signal the kidney to increase pump pressure to drain the excess fluid . This will result in elevated blood pressure which will eventually strain the heart (the 2nd pump) and will later on result in enlargement of the heart (cardiomegaly) due to overwork. Then possible cardiac arrest may follow.
If the 2 pumps ( kidneys and heart) is already minimally functional to drain, then flooding of fluids inside the body will happen ( ascites).
We focus on preserving the function of the 2 pumps, the heart and the kidney. Practice prevention program at a young age.
Focus on what we put inside the mouths of our fur babies.
Excess salt from overfeeding and choosing the wrong diet is the enemy of the 2 major pumps (heart and kidney) of the body.
