✨ Rocko’s Nail Trim Day! ✨
Rocko, our charming green iguana, came in for his nail trim today — an important part of keeping him safe and comfortable, especially since long nails can cause scratches or make climbing difficult.

Fun Fact: Green iguanas are impressive climbers and can drop their tails when they feel threatened — and yes, the tail grows back! They’re also strict herbivores who thrive on leafy greens.

Always happy to care for our exotic pets!

🐾 Keeping Our Knowledge Sharp for Better Pet Care! 🩺

Last week, Dr. Kim joined the first Post-Graduate Scientific Conference of the Philippine College of Canine Practitioners (PCCP) — a 3-day event packed with learning about canine hematology, liver, kidney, and pancreatic diseases.

She also had the honor of being one of the moderators during the Q&A sessions with the speakers. It was a great opportunity to learn, share, and grow with fellow vets! 💛

All for the goal of giving our furry patients the best care possible. 🐶🐾

Rocket’s Story: Why Castration Matters 🐾

Rocket, a 9-year-old Siberian Husky, came to the clinic with a large lump—about the size of a mango—on his right groin area. After examination, we found that it was an inguinal hernia with a testicular tumor inside.

🐶 What is a testicular tumor?
It’s an abnormal growth that develops in the testicles, usually seen in unneutered senior dogs. One common cause is cryptorchidism, a condition where one or both testicles don’t descend properly. The retained testicle stays inside the abdomen or groin, where it’s warmer—making it more likely to develop tumors over time.

✂️ Prevention is key:
Neutering doesn’t just prevent unwanted breeding—it also protects your pet from testicular tumors and other hormone-related issues later in life.

We’re happy to share that Rocket has recovered well after surgery and stitch removal! 💪🐕

🔬👁 Fluorescent Dye Eye Test in Pets

Today’s patient underwent a fluorescent dye test, a quick but very important diagnostic tool for eye health. The dye temporarily stains the surface of the eye and, under a special blue light, highlights any defects on the cornea. In this case, it revealed a corneal ulcer.

💡 Why this test matters:

Corneal ulcers can be painful and may lead to serious complications, including blindness, if left untreated.

The test allows us to detect scratches, ulcers, or foreign bodies on the cornea that are not visible to the naked eye.

Early diagnosis guides us in choosing the right treatment, whether it’s medication, protective lenses, or surgery in severe cases.

Follow-up tests help us monitor healing progress.

⚠️ Did you know? Corneal ulcers can worsen within just 24–48 hours if not treated properly, making early detection and intervention absolutely critical.

👩‍⚕️ At Golden Griffin Animal Clinic, we emphasize the importance of prompt eye checks whenever your pet shows signs such as:
✔ Squinting
✔ Rubbing the eye
✔ Cloudiness
✔ Eye discharge

👀 Protecting your pet’s eyes means protecting their comfort, vision, and quality of life.

🐾 Meet Sidney, our brave 10-year-old Dachshund! 🐾
Sidney’s owner noticed multiple growths on her mammary glands. To prevent further complications, we performed a mammary mass removal together with a spay surgery. Spaying not only helps reduce the chance of new mammary growths but also protects senior females from pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection.

✨ Since Sidney is a senior, extra care was taken. Older pets have higher anesthetic risks, which is why pre-surgical tests (blood work, imaging, and overall health checks) are vital. These tests guide us in making anesthesia and surgical decisions safely.

💉 For Sidney’s surgery, we used propofol for induction and gas anesthesia for maintenance.
✅ Propofol allows a smooth and quick induction, reducing stress.
✅ Gas anesthesia provides better control during surgery and quicker recovery once turned off.

📊 During the procedure, Sidney was continuously monitored—her blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, and oxygen levels were all carefully tracked to ensure her safety every step of the way.

🐝 Now, Sidney is recovering while wearing her adorable bee-shaped e-collar—a reminder that with proper veterinary care, even senior pets can safely undergo surgery and live healthier lives. 💛

Sniffling cats? It might be Feline Respiratory Disease Complex! 😿💨

This is a common and contagious illness in cats caused by viruses and bacteria — mostly feline herpesvirus and calicivirus.

🩺 Common symptoms:
– Sneezing
– Coughing
– Eye and nose discharge
– Red or swollen eyes
– Mouth ulcers
– Loss of appetite and fever

🐱 Kittens, shelter cats, and multi-cat homes are most at risk.
😷 Some cats can carry the virus for life — especially feline herpesvirus, which can stay dormant and reactivate when the cat is stressed.

🤧 How is it transmitted?
It spreads easily through direct contact, grooming, sneezing, or shared food bowls, litter boxes, and even blankets.

💉 Prevention is key!
Vaccinate your cat with the 4-in-1 vaccine, which protects against:
✔️ Feline Herpesvirus (FHV)
✔️ Feline Calicivirus (FCV)
✔️ Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV)
✔️ Feline Chlamydophila (Chlamydia)

If your cat shows any signs, don’t wait — early vet care can help them recover faster and avoid complications.

“BORN WITH RABIES? NOT TRUE! 🐶🐱🛑”

There are still many misconceptions about rabies. Some believe that dogs or cats are born with rabies and it only gets "triggered" when they bite — this is completely FALSE.

🧠 Fact: Rabies is caused by a virus transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, usually via bites. Pets are NOT born with it.

💀 Fact: Once symptoms appear, rabies is 100% fatal. If a pet truly has rabies, it will die within days or weeks — it cannot stay hidden for months or years.

⚠️ And with recent news of humans in the Philippines dying from rabies, it's more important than ever to stay informed and protected.

✅ What to do:
– Vaccinate your pets yearly
– Don’t delay vet visits after bites or unusual behavior
– Educate others to prevent fear and misinformation

Let’s protect each other — pets and humans alike.

“Why is my bearded dragon always opening its mouth?”
This behavior is called gaping, and it’s completely normal for bearded dragons like Zeke, Dr. Kim’s personal pet in the photo!

Here’s why they do it:
– To cool down when they’re basking under their heat lamp
– To show dominance or act defensive
– To relax, believe it or not!
– But if your beardie is also wheezing or has mucus, it might be time for a vet check-up.

So don’t worry — most of the time, gaping is just your beardie being a beardie!
