Back in 2020, tasting rare tropical fruits for the first time inspired us to start growing more of our own food
Sugarcane quickly became one of our favorite crops because it is productive, beautiful, and surprisingly simple to propagate & grow
A single healthy cane can be cut into sections and turned into multiple new plants
We like planting sugarcane in sunny areas with plenty of room for the stalks to grow tall and expand into large clumps
Once established, sugarcane can produce harvests year after year with very little maintenance
In this video, we walk through how we plant it, propagate it, and manage it in our food growing system
Today, sugarcane is one of the many crops growing throughout our agroforestry rows alongside fruit trees, support plants, and pollinator species
