Puppy dog eyes are a real muscle.

Dogs evolved a small eyebrow muscle, the levator anguli oculi medialis, that wolves simply don't have. Its only job is to lift the inner brow into that sad-sweet expression na hindi mo kayang tanggihan.

It grew over thousands of years of living beside us, basically because we kept choosing the dogs who could do it. Kaya kapag tinitigan ka niya bago ka umalis, hindi mo lang iyon iniisip.

When to watch, and when to worry 🐾

Some symptoms you can keep an eye on at home. Others mean it's time to call a vet. Here's the line for five everyday ones:

🤧 Sneezing
✓ Watch: the odd sneeze, still eating and playing.
❗ Worry: frequent sneezing with thick or bloody discharge or a swollen face.

😮 Coughing
✓ Watch: a rare cough that settles fast.
❗ Worry: a persistent or honking cough, gagging, or any trouble breathing.

💩 Diarrhea
✓ Watch: one soft stool, still bright and drinking.
❗ Worry: lasting over a day, with blood or vomiting, especially in puppies and kittens.

🫧 Itching
✓ Watch: the occasional scratch, healthy-looking skin.
❗ Worry: non-stop scratching, raw or bald patches, redness, or a smell.

🔎 Lumps
✓ Watch: a small, soft lump that hasn't changed.
❗ Worry: one that grows, hardens, bleeds, or appears suddenly.
