A Life Worth Pausing For 💔
Shadow, an 8-month-old female pup, was scheduled for her spay last week—a routine surgery for many, but for Shadow, it became anything but.
During her pre-surgical bloodwork, we found her platelet count dangerously low—an immediate red flag. We strongly recommended a tick-borne disease screening, as it could reveal underlying conditions. Unfortunately, the owner declined the test, opting instead for supportive medications we hoped would help.
A week later, Shadow’s platelet count slightly improved, but not enough for us to be confident. Again, we insisted on the screening. Again, it was refused.
Still, the owner decided to proceed with the surgery.
During the operation, as soon as the first incision was made, blood began to pool—more than what’s expected. Despite careful technique, we could barely move forward. The bleeding was excessive, and when we tried to locate the uterus, Shadow’s vital signs began to drop. Her gums turned pale. Her life was on the line.
At that moment, the most important decision was made: the surgery was aborted. Not because of failure—but because of courage, compassion, and swift clinical judgment.
Shadow survived. And only after this near-tragic experience did the owner agree to the screening test.
The results? Positive for Ehrlichia and Anaplasma.
This could have been avoided. What started as a non-emergency procedure turned into a life-threatening one—all due to selective listening and refusal to follow medical advice.
Let Shadow’s story be a reminder:
☑️Your veterinarian is your partner in your pet’s health.
☑️ Pre-surgical tests are not optional—they’re life-saving.
☑️ Don’t ignore red flags or decline tests without understanding the full risk.
To Shadow—you are brave, and we’re thankful you’re still with us. May your healing journey now begin in full.
To all pet owners—please, trust your vet. We’re not just here to treat—we’re here to protect.
