Dexter’s Finally Off His Heavy Load

Like Atlas in Greek Mythology, Dexter’s carrying the weight of the world. Not on his shoulders though but on his chest.

It’s humongous and heavy. It’s not painful but it caused Dexter extreme discomfort. It reduced the quality of his daily life. He can’t walk or run like he used to.

What the heck he’s carrying anyway?

It’s a Soft Tissue Sarcoma.

🍒 What is it?
⚡️Soft Tissue Sarcoma (STS) is a tumor that originates in connective tissues, muscles, tendons and adipose tissues.
⚡️STS usually grows under the skin with a firm, non-painful mass. This mass can cause discomfort as it grows bigger.

🍒 How does it progress into a large tumor?
⚡️STS grows slowly over weeks or months. Most cases of STS arise without a clear, definite cause. It is often unknown but somewhat related to chronic inflammation, environmental and genetic factors.
⚡️The growth rate of STS varies upon the tumor’s grade. Low-grade STS can grow slowly in months and years while High-grade STS grows and spreads more quickly.

🍒 Treatment Options
⚡️ Surgery. This is the complete surgical removal of the mass.
⚡️ Chemotherapy. If the tumor is too large and can’t be removed with surgery, chemo helps the tumor’s growth to slow down its progress.
⚡️ Radiation. This is used in managing STS when surgical margins are incomplete and when the tumor’s location site is inoperable.

Dexter’s case is a Low-grade STS.
Treatment of choice is surgical removal.

We did the surgical procedure cautiously because he’s anemic. Pawrent don’t want to wait any longer because Dexter’s quality of life is already affected. His tumor dangles to the ground whenever he walks.

While doing the procedure, the team had a guessing game what’s the weight of the mass. Could it be 0.5kg or more? The highest guess was 0.8kg. When the mass was removed and weighed, it was a whooping 1kg! Nobody got it right. It exceeded our estimation!

After surgery, Dexter’s case was far from over.

With a 10-inch incision, post-operative care at home is crucial. This can MAKE or BREAK the surgical procedure.

Without strict restriction of movement and not wearing of cone? Incision site can be licked causing sutures to open. Wounds can get infected, can delay healing, patient can either have sepsis and in extreme cases the patient will die.

But Dexter has been a very good boy. Although he likes to move a lot, he didn’t chew his incision site😘 Pawrent also kept an eye on him religiously.

His D-Day was his suture removal day.

Incision site?
Healed, beautifully.

Now that it’s over, Dexter can play, walk comfortably and run wherever & whenever he wants to.

He’s finally free!

The Time When Stella Almost Didn’t Make It

We met Stella for the first time when she’s brought to us having bloody vaginal discharges, no appetite and has been on medications for days. She’s a referral patient.

Stella is a 7-year-old female intact dog. Intact means if a male dog/cat is not neutered & a female dog/cat is not spayed.

She’s suffering from Pyometra.

Pyometra is the accumulation of bacteria, pus and blood within the uterus. This happens when there’s hormonal changes during heat cycle causing the uterine linings to thicken and when bacteria invades the uterus that leads to inflammation and formation of pus within the uterine walls. Pyometra is commonly seen in unspayed female dogs when they reach 5-6 years old or more.

There are 2 types of Pyometra:
❇️ Closed Pyometra
Your paw kid will have a swollen abdomen, painful when palpated. Cervix is closed and pus cannot drain. It will then progress to severe illness and can lead to death.
❇️ Open Pyometra
There’s loss of appetite, lethargy, painful abdomen and bloody vaginal discharges. This is Stella’s case.

Stella fits the risk factors of Pyo. She’s 7 years old and unspayed.

Since this is Pyometra, it is best to remove her entire female reproductive tract. The treatment of choice is ovariohysterectomy.

Ovariohysterectomy or Spay is a safe and routine elective surgical procedure.

But there’s a big problem in Stella’s case. It’s high-risk for her.

Here at Pawprints, we always say numbers don’t lie. But looking at her blood work up results’ numbers? It’s grim.

Her pre-anesthetic panel result didn’t look good. Her CBC result? It’s dismal.

Having a platelet count of 7 when the normal values should be at 140-520 & RBC count of 2? This is worrisome and can lead to a disaster.

We had an open discussion with Stella’s Pawrent. We have 2 options:
🙏🏻1) Continue to treat Stella with oral antibiotics but this is not the best choice. Her blood and pus-filled uterus should be removed. Antibiotics alone couldn’t suffice it. If the infected uterus is not removed, Stella could end up dead.
🙏🏻 2) High-risk ovariohysterectomy that could either make Stella recover or die. 50/50 chance.

Pawrent chose the latter. He couldn’t bear Stella’s pain. If something’s bad going to happen to her during surgery, at least she fought a good fight.

With Stella’s bleak Platelet & RBC count situation, we pushed through the ovariohysterectomy.

Remarkably, her surgical procedure went well.
We didn’t have any complications either.
Post-operative care at home was also a breeze.

Today, we removed her sutures😊

Stella will surely live longer, now that the source of infection is gone. Also, Spayed females have longer lifespan.

But not yet Stell, you still have rounds of medications to finish. We need that blood values corrected.

For the meantime, enjoy your second life at home while taking your meds🥰

It was an amazing journey of survival for you, Stella.

We can’t wait to see you again for your scheduled retest.

🐶💜 Pawrent: Eddie Marigmen

🎯Side Note:
Pyometra is a life- theatening condition but this can be prevented.
How?
By spaying your female paw kids early on.
Don’t wait for Pyometra to happen before you decide to take action.
Here at Pawprints, we believe Prevention is the NEW CURE.

🎯 ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Having a pet is COSTLY but don’t wait for unwanted medical conditions (like Pyometra) to show up that can COST your pet’s life.

Too expensive to have a pawkid?
Here are 2 Types of Spending Your Cold Cash for Veterinary Bills

“Veterinary bills are so expensive.” This is a very common lament by pet owners. But the answer to this complaint is subjective.

Yes, having a pet will cost you and your money. And sometimes, both your money and your pet.

But do you know what you are spending on?

What is your main focus when it comes to your pet’s health? Is it their overall well-being? Or disease when they are already sick? By knowing your priorities, then you can equate it on how you’re going to spend.

2 TYPES OF SPENDING IN PAYING YOUR VETERINARY BILLS

1) PROACTIVE SPENDING

❇️ This type of spending is for your pet’s overall health. This is on the wellness side. Prevention.
❇️ You bring your pet to the clinic even if they’re not sick.
❇️ This is planned & intentional.
❇️ This will take you 6-8 times a year to visit us.

❇️ This is their social clinic visits either quarterly, biannually and annual visits for preventive medications and early detection tests.
❇️ When you noticed something’s off with your pawkid, this is best the time when we can discuss things.
❇️ You spend money but not that much. This is when you know the current status of your pawkids’ health.
❇️ You are paying for your own peace of mind.

2. REACTIVE SPENDING

❇️ This is when you bring your pet to the clinic when it’s sick.

🔴 Scene 1: Puppy shots and worming program is complete but didn’t come back to the clinic for about 1-3 years because pet didn’t show any signs of illness. Then pet got sick.

🔴 Scene 2: No clinic visits at all. Pet is brought to the clinic because it is on the brink of death.

🔴 Scene 3: Common emergencies that can be prevented if pet is taken care of properly. No planned pet pawrenthood.

These 3 common scenarios happen all the time. And these 3 will cost you much.

It will cost you DOUBLE:

COST OF MONEY 💰 💰💰

❇️ You will pay for diagnostic tests, confinement, surgery, take home medications, maintenance meds, prescription diets depending upon the results of the diagnostic tests.

COST OF HEARTBREAK 💔💔💔

❇️ You already have an emotional attachment and strong bond with your pawkid.
❇️ It’s an amazing journey if your pawkid can survive on the brink of death.
❇️ But when it’s not? It’s hard to bear.
❇️ The emotional cost of GRIEF is the most EXPENSIVE of all.

For the big, quiet suplado guy who is giving us a side-eye in the photo?

He is Honesto.
He is 10 years old.
His annual blood workup result?
All NORMAL🙌🏻
Even his SDMA!
Having all normal blood workup result plus a normal SDMA is such a big achievement for a senior dog like him🥰

We don’t mind the occasional growls and side-eye he’s giving us while collecting his blood sample🤷🏻‍♀️

All that matters is when he left the clinic that day, we all knew that his health is as good as new!

You are already spending for veterinary bills. Why not choose to spend when your pawkid is still healthy, strong and you know their health status?

Don’t bring them when it’s already too late and you will experience DOUBLE HEARTBREAKS:

The heartbreak of losing lots of moolah & the heartbreak of losing your pet.

You choose.

And choose well.

Honesto’s Pawmom chose the first type- being a proactive spender.

You deserve peace and quality of life with your pawkids.

Your pawkids deserve to live and be around you for a long time.

Toffee & Bravecto 365

Have you heard the latest?

Bravecto 365 was launched February 2025 here in the Philippines. We are the first country in Southeast Asia to have it💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

It is the first long-acting systemic ectoparasiticide for the treatment and prevention of ticks & fleas throughout the year.

Unlike Bravecto chewable that you will give orally every quarter, Bravecto 365 is a single-dose injection.

It’s hassle-free. 1 injection for 1 whole year of full protection.

This is best for:
✅ Busy pet owners that have limited time in visiting the clinic multiple times a year for their pawkids’ anti tick & flea prevention.
✅ Hypochondriac pet owners that are scared their pets can get sick because of ticks.
✅ Pet owners who travel a lot in different locations. You will never know what diseases your pawkids can get during your travel.
✅ Pet owners who choose peace of mind when it comes to tick-borne diseases.
✅ Pet owners who think long-term for their pawkids’ health. Because why not? Pawkids are family. They deserve the best.

It is finally here!

Bravecto 365 is now available at our clinic!

Ready to make the switch?

Or do you still have apprehensions? We can have discussions to clear your hesitations.

Toffee just did.
He chose 365.❣️

02/05/2025

Cocoa, our 20-year-old geriatric patient.

Let’s dive deep how Cocoa made it this far.

❇️ A Dog’s Lifespan

🧿Dog’s are not created equal. Your dog’s breed size is one of the factors that determine their lifespan. Their lifespan differs when it comes to their breed size.

🧿 Average lifespan of a dog:
🐶 Small Breed: 10-15 years
🐶 Medium Breed: 10-13 years
🐶 Large Breed: 10-12 years
🐶 Giant Breed: 8-10 years

🧿 Dogs aged differently depending on their size. Large and Giant breeds age faster at an accelerated pace. They are considered “senior” at 5-6 years old while small breeds at 7-8. A 7-year-old Mini Pinscher is just entering senior years but for a Great Dane, it may be near to the end of their typical life expectancy.

🧿 Contrary to popular belief, dogs don’t age at a rate of 7 human years for each dog year. This is outdated.

❇️ Calculating Dog vs Human Years

🧿 Here’s the dog age calculator according to AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association)’s general guidelines:

🧿 Dog’s Age vs Age in Human Years

🐶 Small Breed
1 year 15 years
2 years: add 9 years 24 years
🐶 Medium Breed
1 year 15 years
2 years: add 9 years 24 years
🐶 Large Breed
1 year 15 years
2 years: add 9 years 24 years
🐶 Giant Breed
1 year 12 years
2 years: add 10 years 22 years
The first 2 years of your dog’s age computation is fixed.

🧿 After your dog is 2 years old, one human year could be equivalent to:
🐶 Small Breed: 4 years
🐶 Medium Breed: 4-5 years
🐶 Large Breed: 5-6 years
🐶 Giant Breed: 7-8 years
You add this number of years after your dog’s 2nd barkday.

❇️ Veterinary Care

🧿 Reaching 20 years old didn’t just happen overnight. These are the things that Cocoa & his Pawmon did:
✅ Love & affection
✅ Keen observation at home
✅ Keeping him safe from accidents and poisoning at all times.
✅ Client Compliance
✅ Right Nutrition
✅ Maintaining his ideal weight
✅ Scheduled Veterinary Visits
✅ Annual wellness checks. Cocoa don’t only visit the clinic when he’s sick. He visits for his wellness checks, too.

Now let’s do the math for Cocoa’s dog vs human years.

For 2025 he’s 20 dog years old. When he’s 2 dog years old, he is 24 human years. Let’s add 18 dog years multiplied by 4 human years is 72. 72 plus 24 is 96 human years!

He’s way, way old right now but aside from his skin tag, very slight visual & mobility issues, occasional bouts of dementia, all his organs are still functioning well. He’s in tip top shape despite being a senior!

We at Pawprints Veterinary Clinic are very much excited when we add another 4 years in 2026 making you, Cocoa, our oldest patient that will turn 100 human years old! 💖💛💚❤️

2 BEAUTIFUL MINDS

Clyde & Shane

Clyde, from Isabela State University - Roxas Senior High School.

Shane, from Roxas Stand-Alone Senior High School.

Our clinic’s immersion students, two years apart.

Clyde is currently enrolled in Veterinary Medicine at Isabela State University Echague. He is a DOST scholar. This is not an easy feat.

Shane got accepted at Central Luzon State University and will be a 1st year Vet Med student when the school year opens.

Why would our clinic featured them again?
Because they are both achievers in their own right.

Our hearts are swelling with pride because these two got the same award on their Senior High graduation!

Clyde was the 2023 ISU- Senior High Best in Work Immersion in their batch🏆🏆🏆

And Shane? Drum roll, please!

You got it right!

Shane is the 2025 RSASH Best in Work Immersion, too! 🏆🏆🏆

He just graduated today🏅

Here in the clinic, we are all on cloud nine!

And we are “twice as lucky!”

We are so proud of you guys🎉🎉🎉

Keep up the good work!

As what we always emphasized in the clinic during your Work Immersion with us, love for animals is not enough in studying Veterinary Medicine. It takes commitment, determination and GRIT. The last one is the major factor in making it through the FINISH LINE.

Vet Med years is “gruelly taxing” but it’s worth it😘 Enjoy the ride! 💖💛💖

Chip, Scan & Register: Three Easy Steps to Get Your Pawbabies Permanently ID’d

Luna is preparing for her London trip this year.
For starters, she needs to have her own pet identification number.

Wearing a collar ID with the pet & owner’s current information works. However, this is not considered permanent because collars can be altered or lost.

How can pets have their own permanent identification number?

By implanting a microchip.

A microchip is a very small device, usually about a grain of rice in size that is commonly injected between the shoulder blades.

Microchipping is a simple, painless procedure that takes just a few seconds. This procedure is like having your pets vaccinated. The only difference is the size of the needle. It’s quite bigger.

After the microchip is implanted, the patient is scanned non-invasively to read the patient’s own permanent microchip number.

The microchip manufacturer has a website where you can attach your contact information like name, address, email address and phone number to your pet’s microchip number.

You have to register your pet’s microchip number and your contact info to the website for it to be recorded.

This chip, your pet’s permanent lifetime identification number is now recorded in the manufacturer’s database after you registered.

Here’s how it works:
Microchip Implantation ▶️ Scan ▶️ Register

Luna hails from Cauayan City.
She got microchipped here in Roxas.

Thank you, Luna❣️

For more info about Microchipping, how it works, how owners can be reunited with their lost pets and other common queries, you may read our January 13, 2024 post in this page.

A full-circle moment for Ziane Wrandle.

When he was still a kid, he usually tagged along with his parents when they visited the clinic with their pets years ago. He loved animals since then.

Now all grown up, he decided to pursue Veterinary Medicine next school year and have his Immersion with us.

May you learned and retained something during your Immersion stay with the introductory lectures, observational learning and hands-on experience here in the clinic.

It’s a wrap for you with us today❣️

Brace yourself next school year. Vet School is way different. It’s ruthless! Hope to see you years from now with your license👊🏻

We are all rooting for you🎉🎉🎉🎉

Side Note:
Ziane is obviously the one who wore scrubs in a different color. To our regular clients, you already know the 3 musketeers Efraim (Paeng), Eroll & Edrian (Drian). All the boys had a great time with Ziane’s very short time with us💖

7 Common Myths and Misconceptions That Are Labeled to Cats

Dogs and cats have different personality types. They are exact opposites. Cats are usually stereotyped into something they aren’t.

Check out how many of these myths and misconceptions you still regard as true:

1) Cats are aloof.
🐱 They’re not. Cats are capable of deep connection towards their pawrents but show their affection differently compared to dogs.
🐱 Cats’ ways are subtle. Most cats don’t enjoy being petted in the same way you pet your dog. They maybe enjoy sitting inches away from you, rub their head against you, rub alongside of you. These are all signs of affection. They just give love and affection in a different, subtle way.
✅Pro Tip: You can form a strong bond with your felines by understanding their personality and respecting their space.

2) Declawing a cat is okay.
🐱No, declawing is a cruel elective surgical procedure. This is when the cats’ first joint of toes and claws are surgically removed. This is inhumane and can cause pain, nerve trauma and long-term complications like lameness and behavioral problems later in life.
✅Pro Tip: Claws are better left alone. Declawing is not medically necessary unless the patient has a damaged claw or a severe nail bed infection.

3) Pregant women should throw out or abandon their cats.
🐱 They shouldn’t. Direct contact with cats are not harmful to preggos. It’s the direct contact with the cat’s f***s that carries Toxoplasmosis that can pose high risk to pregnant women.
✅ Pro Tip: For preggos, have someone else clean your cat’s litter box in a daily basis.

4) Cats are low-maintenance.
🐱 They aren’t. Cats are so good in hiding their illness and pain. They have unique needs for their well-being that include nutritional considerations, mental stimulation, social interaction and veterinary care for their overall health. Neglecting these needs can lead to behavioral issues and diseases.
✅ Pro Tip: Don’t get a cat if you expect it to be just a “low-maintenance” pet. They need owners to step up, to make same amount of time and yes, money- as you would do to dogs.

5) Cats can be fed with vegan and/or vegetarian diets.
🐱 They can’t. For vegan and vegetarian pawrents, your felines can’t have a plant-based diet same as yours. Cats are obligate carnivores.
Feeding a cat with a vegan and/or vegetarian diet can lead to serious health complications.
✅ Pro Tip: Cats require nutrients that can be found only in meat. Taurine, an essential amino acid that is vital for the cats’ health can only be sourced from animal proteins.

6) Indoor cats can’t have ticks, fleas and diseases.
🐱They can. Fleas can hang unto people either in their clothing or shoes. In a multiple cat household, fleas are present but unseen. Indoor cats also need both physical and mental stimulation to avoid obesity.
✅ Pro Tip: Cats should have their year-round anti tick and flea preventative program, vaccinations and wellness exams.

7) Cats have 9 lives.
🐱They don’t have. Although cats are very agile and are great escape artists, they only have ONE life just like us, humans.
✅ Pro Tip: Have them regularly checked with your vet.

Just like Tobby, Matcha & Oreo. These trio never fail to have their clinic visits.

They may have an RBF (Resting Bitch Face), but it’s all for a nonchalant stance. They love us as much as we love having them around.

21/02/2025

Afraid for your pets to go under the knife?

Spay & Neuter (S/N)

All pawrents are familiar with this surgical procedure but there are only few who took the leap to do this with their pawkids.

Why? Because surgery gives pawrents surgical anxiety.

“Is it painful?”

“How long will it heal?”

“Is it safe?”

“Are you sure my pawbaby is still the same after she’s spayed?”

“Are there any complications afterwards?”

S/N (Spay and Neuter) is not to be scared about. This is a safe, routine surgical procedure most veterinarians do all the time.

How can you reduce the risk?

✅ Choose your veterinarian.
🎯Have an open medical discussion with your vet.
🎯You can ask him/her everything related to the procedure. The pros, cons, the right age for a certain breed to be S/N, behavioral concerns, possible complications and your surgical anxiety, too.
🎯When in doubt, always ask and then discuss.

✅ Choose what type of S/N you like.
🎯 FREE or Low-Cost S/N is usually done by NGOs in animal shelters and in low-cost clinics.
🎯 S/N in vet clinics. This is for pawrents that are apprehensive to take the leap. It’s okay to be afraid. This is your safe space to ask and discuss with your vet everything you’re scared of.

✅ Pre & Post- Surgical Care
🎯 S/N in vet clinics is a different set-up to keep your pawkids safe and for the pawrents’ mind to be at ease.
🎯 “Will my pet die?” A very common question. “Death on the table” (when a patient dies during a surgical procedure) rarely happens in S/N. That’s why you have to do the pre-surgical assessment with your vet.
🎯Post- surgical care is in the hands of the pawrents. If every medical instruction is followed after the procedure, then post-surgical complications won’t happen.

✅ Cost
🎯It varies depending upon the species, breed, age and weight of the patient. There are also tests that you can discuss with your vet.
🎯”Spay and neuter is costly especially spay!” We hear this very often. Yes, it’s costly that’s why you have options on what type of S/N to choose and the risk appetite that you can take. But, it is better SAFE than SORRY.

February is Spay & Neuter Awareness Month
