Luna Bear & Gucci’s Senior Health Check

They’re both entering their sunset years. Senior na.

Luna Bear was screened for Early Detection Tests last December 2025 and Gucci February this year.

Both have initial kidney & heart disease. Early stages of damage in both organs.

They’ve been on medications since their screens.

May is both their birthday month.

Time for retest to see if they responded to their medications.

Gucci’s results are all within the normal range now.😇

Luna Bear’s kidneys are back to full swing. Normal. As for the early heart detection retest result? cTnL (cardiac Troponin I) is now Normal.
NT-proBNP is Borderline Normal.

We’re glad with these results. We’re able to manage the early “Cardiorenal Connection.”🫶🏼

Luna Bear will still have meds. Still be monitored and screened again next quarter.🙏🏻

Gucci’s finally off his meds and prescription diet. We recently changed his diet into a diet that’s specific for large senior dogs🥰

Did you know that our clinic offers 50% off in all screenings when it’s your pawkids’s birthday?

Because…

You deserve to know your pawkids’ health status.

Summer Series #2: ☀️⛱️😎🕶️🐾☀️
Does your pawkid smell stonger this season?
There’s a reason.

Your pawkid’s stronger “summer smell” isn’t just in your imagination - it’s BIOLOGICAL not just hygiene-related.

How is that so?
☀️🐾 Warmer temperatures stimulate sebaceous glands, increasing oil (sebum) production.
☀️🐾 Excess oil creates an ideal environment for microbes like Malassezia, Staphylococcus which break down oils into ODOR- CAUSING COMPOUNDS.
☀️🐾 Humidity traps moisture in skin folds, ears, paws.
☀️🐾 Moist environment accelerates microbial growth.
🔺RESULT: A stronger, sometimes musty odor.

Mild odor can be normal but persistent smell may indicate infection or dermatitis.

Regular grooming and thorough drying help control odor.

Bentley & Boodie

Bentley came in because his curly haircoat was muddy & with just the right amount of smell🤭 He’s fond of playing with their family horses, the reason for the dirt & mud.😅

After a meticulous haircoat & odor exam, all’s good👌

When he’s already squeaky clean, Boodie joined him for a snap.

Huge congratulations to our adopted clinic dog, Pororo for winning the Asong Pinoy category & Pet of the Year award on the 1st Roxas Dog Show. What a win! 🐾🏅🏆👑

It was 2023 when we got Pororo.

She’s emaciated, skin & bones, positive for 3 types of blood parasitism and organs started to fail.

Epistaxis (nose bleeding) was a daily scenario when we got her.

She’s grumpy & had trust issues to humans. We couldn’t pet or touch her. Clinic boys tried but got bitten multiple times.

We patiently treated her for months until she’s healthy enough to get spayed.

Little by little she started to trust again and allowed us and our clients to pet her. She became friendly to everyone.

Now, she’s a great escape artist!😅

She loves to go incognito, get out of the clinic’s back door and goes anywhere she wants😬

We got calls from our clients who knew her that she’s already too far away from the clinic😱

At times, we’re all frustrated by her crazy antics!

But love & worry always prevail.
We always forgive her “ballog” personality.

It’s not in the plan to let her join the dog show.
She will just go there & the clinic will give & distribute something.
(Thank you Royal Canin & Happy Pet!)

But she joined & unexpectedly won! 🥰🐾👑

Thank you Municipality of Roxas for the invite🫶🏼
The 1st Roxas Dog Show was for the benefit of the Roxas Animal Shelter.

Thank you, Pororo had a great time!

Summer Series #1☀️🏖️😎
Why Pawkids Lose Appetite in Summer - And When To Worry

A reduced appetite during summer season is common but it’s also one of the most misinterpreted warning signs pawrents overlook.

☀️Appetite drops in hot weather because heat affects your pawkid’s physiology:
▪️ Lower energy needs. They naturally eat less.
▪️ Heat discomfort. This reduces their desire to eat.
▪️ Panting. It can cause mild dehydration, which suppresses appetite.

Some pawkids will shift their eating schedule to cooler hours or become “picky” at daytime. That alone isn’t a problem.

☀️ What’s Normal (Monitor, Don’t Panic)
▪️ Eating slightly less than usual
▪️ Skipping one meal but eating the next
▪️ Still active, alert & drinks water
▪️ Prefers eating early morning or evening

☀️What’s NOT Normal (Act EARLY)
▪️ No food intake for 24 hours or more
▪️ Lethargy or unusual quietness
▪️ Vomiting or diarrhea
▪️ Refusing water
▪️ Excessive panting
▪️ Labored breathing

☀️ Why Timing Matters
▪️ Loss of appetite is rarely the final problem. It’s usually an early symptom.
▪️ Ignore it and you risk escalation:
🔺Minor infection - systemic illness
🔺No appetite for too long - dehydration
🔺Excessive panting ignored - heat stroke

☀️ Cost Reality:
▪️ Early consult: 500-1,500
▪️ Delayed care: 5,000- 10,000+ (Tests, Medications, Confinement)

Same starting symptom.
Completely different outcome when it comes to veterinary bills.

☀️ Practical Preventive Actions At Home
▪️ Feed during cooler hours before 8am or after 6pm.
▪️ Offer fresh dog food. Heat accelerates spoilage.
▪️ Ensure constant access to clean, cool water.
▪️ Avoid sudden diet changes.
▪️ Observe daily. Don’t rely on memory.

☀️ The Strategic Mindset Shift
▪️ Most pawrents wait for serious problems. But in veterinary practice, early intervention is the CHEAPEST intervention.

A small appetite change is easy to ignore but it’s often your first and best chance to act before COSTS & RISKS INCREASE.

This summer, don’t just notice if your pawkid eats. Notice HOW THEIR EATING HABIT CHANGES. That awareness alone can prevent a minor issue from becoming a major expense.

🐶WANDA.

Well, her?
She stayed with us for one week because her pawrents are out on a summer vacay.
She’s constantly monitored because of her kidney disease. She’s in a prescription renal diet & on meds.

Despite the summer season, her appetite’s good during her 7-day stay (she’s a picky eater at home, btw) & we couldn’t be happier when she eats a lot here!🥰😎⛱️🐾

For our “paw-pack’s” reference & awareness.
Please Note.

This case describes an 80-year-old woman who developed rapidly progressive and fatal sepsis due to Capnocytophaga following a minor dog bite.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a type of bacteria commonly found in the mouths of dogs and cats. It can be transmitted to humans through bites, scratches, or even saliva contacting broken skin. In most cases, it does not cause serious illness—but in rare situations, it can spread rapidly into the bloodstream and lead to severe infection (sepsis).

She initially presented with a 2-day history of fever, abdominal pain, and altered mental status. On arrival, she was still alert, but her condition rapidly worsened—she became drowsy, hypoxic, and developed mottled skin changes consistent with purpura fulminans. Despite aggressive treatment, her condition progressed to refractory septic shock.

Although severe infection is more commonly seen in individuals with liver disease, immunosuppression, chronic illness, or advanced age, this patient had no clear predisposing conditions aside from being elderly. Age-related decline in immune function (immunosenescence) likely contributed to her susceptibility and the severity of disease.

Importantly, this case highlights how dog bites are often underestimated. The patient sought medical care and received antibiotics three days after the bite and at least two days after early signs of infection had already developed. This delay, combined with the virulence of C. canimorsus, likely contributed to the rapid progression to multiorgan dysfunction and septic shock.

Diagnosis of C. canimorsus can be challenging due to its slow growth in standard cultures. On microscopy, it appears as Gram-negative, fusiform rods, and more advanced techniques such as PCR and 16S rRNA sequencing are often required for definitive identification.

Key takeaway: Dog bites should never be underestimated. Even minor wounds can lead to severe, life-threatening infections. Early recognition and prompt initiation of antibiotics are critical.

Chinky-eyed Chow Chow Family

Mommy Stacey & her 2
big boys Mix & Max came in for their regular pamper sesh & wellness check.

Each of the three patiently waited for 2 hours in the grooming table of enduring combing, dematting, combing again, styling, making them smell good & squeaky clean until they’re done.

Stacey & Mix were well-behaved (not the usual Chow Chow attitude🫢😂 because they can be ferocious.) It was Max who’s holding back his temper when dematted.😅

When it’s done, they looked regal with their round fluffball haircoat.

And, they’re obviously proud & happy with their new summer look!🤗

Agus

What started as a simple vomiting turned into a 10-day ordeal.

If a pet vomits but remains alert, active and with good appetite afterwards, there’s nothing to worry about.

But when he/she vomits with malunggay colored vomitus and no appetite? That’s another story.

Agus had a history of blood parasitism from way back. When he came in, he already vomited multiple times the previous day & no appetite.

We did screenings. CBC, 5 way test, SDMA, Health Diagnosis Panel, cPL. Nothing much in the CBC results. Still positive for Ehrlichiosis & a faint line for Babesiosis.

Kidney & liver profile normal. cPL was slightly elevated. TP, ALB, Glu were low so we hooked him with IV fluids and medications given.

The following days, he’s still vomiting bile.

There are many causes of bilious vomiting.
Each differentials should be ruled out.

Is this just Ehrlichiosis or Babesiosis?
Hepatobiliary disease?
Cholangitis?
Pancreatitis?
Or obstruction?

We didn’t want to miss anything so Imaging (Radiography & Sonography) were done next.

Exploratory Laparotomy was recommended but pawrents wanted the conservative approach first before we do anything invasive.

We did series of retests:
Repeat CBC, 5-way test, cPL, SDMA, Health Diagnosis Panel, Comprehensive Diagnosis panel.

cPL (Canine Pancreatic Lipase) spiked from 243, 859 to >3,000!

It was the elevated LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase) that made the prognosis guarded to poor.

Still, we kept on going. Pawrents already shed some tears.

We corrected the electrolyte imbalance based on the retest results. Added aggressive multimodal medications.

Our lucky break happened on the dawn of Agus’ 8th day. His appetite’s back!

Medications working, Agus’ system responding!

We did small frequent feedings with prescription food. No vomiting. Increased the volume of GI LF. No vomiting. Bilious vomiting gone & able to pass normal stools.

We did retest again.
cPL still >3,000 but LDH’s already NORMAL🥰

What a relief!🫶🏼

He’s finally off with his IV fluids on his 10th day.

Agus surpassed the most critical time!🩷👌

Now, he’s in the recovery period. He’s on oral medications with strict nutritional management.

We still have a long way to go.
There will be a series of repeat tests again.
cPL will be continuously monitored in the months to come until it will be back to normal.

We know Agus don’t mind for the repeat tests.
He’s been such a good boy the entire time he’s sick.

And has been very brave too, each time his blood was drawn.

Agus, we’re looking forward to your next scheduled retests and to see your cPL results below 200🙏🏻

Meanwhile, have fun being back to your old bouncy self! 🩷💜🩵
