BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE BRITISH CAT BREED
British Shorthair cats are divided into three groups according to their eye color.
GROUP 1: 𧑠British Orange eyes π§‘
This group is often called the classic group with their solid color hair such as the popular blue, lilac, cinnamon, cream, red, and white. They also come in mask patterns and two colors (bi-colour). This group of British cats will have orange eyes (not yellow - yellow eyes are Scottish cat's eye color).
GROUP 2: π British green eyes π
This group will have gold or silver hair, which is sometimes called the chinchilla group. They will have green eyes (eye shades can be available from light green to dark green).
GROUP 3: π British blue eyes π
This group is called the colour point cat. It has a light core and dark coloured points. The important characteristic of colour point cat is that every cat will have blue eyes.
But in British cats, we have to follow whether the colour point cat came from an orange or green eyed cat. British blue eyes are further divided by two more groups:
3.1 blue eyes from orange eyes
3.2 blue eyes from green eyes
When breeding them, always keep these two main things in mind.
1. Orange-eyed cat has to mix with Orange-eyed cat only.
2. Green-eyed cat has to mix with Green-eyed cat only.
Blue-eyed cat can mix with all eye colors. But it would be good if we can match the colour point family, and know if the blue eyed cat came from an orange eyed family or a green eyed family.
If we notice from the pedigree, we will see the practice being done from the above breeding guidelines.
It is this practice that we need to conserve and follow so that we can preserve the value of the British cat.
But there are some questions as well. If we do not follow the practice, and we will mix British Orange eyes with British Green eyes, what will be the result?
1. Mixing British Orange eyes with British green eyes is not prohibited but not recommended. If they are mixed (orange eyes and green eyes), it will result in inferior quality of kittensβ colour. Most likely the kittens will have an unspecified tabby pattern.
2. The value of British cat comes in part from its eye color. If we breed orange eyes with green eyes, we will get a kitten with yellow eyes. The value would be inferior and the family line destroyed. It is a waste of money and effort of the breeders who preserve the lineage. And this in turn, will devalue the next generation of British cats.

In conclusion, mixing British cats with orange eyes and British cats with green eyes does not help in conserving the British cat breed.
