Happy national black cat day 🐈⬛ to all my dear black cattos! I wav meow ol! 🐾🐱😽
October 27th is National Black Cat Day...
Halloween is that time of the year when we dress up and celebrate all things dark and spooky. Here at the Center, this time of the year makes us focus on one particular group of felines that deserves our special attention: black cats.
For many reasons, black cats have historically been inappropriately and unfairly maligned as being in concert with witches and as symbols of bad luck; but we know the truth, which is that black cats are AWESOME!
Did you know that black cats have a harder time finding their forever homes in shelters? For reasons that are unclear, they tend to spend more time in shelters and get fewer clicks on on-line adoption sites. While this probably has something to do with the unfair historic discrimination that has been cast their way, efforts to improve adoption rates of black cats by doing things like posting pictures of them with cat toys and outside of their shelter cage rather than in it have been successful in some areas.
Please consider adopting an ebony kitty. While some shelters choose not to adopt out black cats around Halloween for fear that they may be neglected/abused around this time (anecdotal reports suggest that they may be in some cases, but data verifying this are lacking), many will do this with appropriate screening of adopters. If, however, your local shelter prefers to wait until after Halloween to adopt out black cats, be patient and check back with them after Halloween.
Trust us, black cats are WORTH THE WAIT!
