Tips when inquiring an aquarium w/ your local Aquarium maker (Phil only):
1. Specify your desired Dimension by giving the proper size of the tank.
Standard Engineering Size for a rectangular object should be in the following order: L x W x H (Length x Width x Height), ex. 5ft x 2.5ft x 2ft. whereas 5ft is automatically the length, 2.5ft is automatically the width and so on.
2. Avoid providing your desired tank's size in gallons (volume) to avoid confusions. Be precise! a 120gals tank can have different sizes but still has the same volume. Like a balloon filled w/ a gallon of water, you can press it to different heights but will still have the same volume.
3. If possible, provide sizes in inches or in feet. not in mm, cm or meters, so your tank maker can give you the price faster. Raw Glass sheets are cut in English measurements like 4ft x 8ft, 6ft x 8ft, 6ft x 10ft etc. and so your tank maker compute your tank’s cost in English system.
4. Let your Tank Maker decide the proper thickness of the glass and if it should be tempered or not. For your safety please don’t argue, your tank maker should know.
5. Guides in glass specs relative to cost:
• 1/2in.(12mm) thick is more expensive by only 13.2% compared to 3/8 in. (10mm) thick glass, so you are not saving so much if you opted for the 3/8.
• Tempered glass is more expensive by 50% compared to regular glass.
• Low iron glass is more expensive by 75% compared to regular glass and 12% more expensive compared to tempered glass.
• Low iron-Tempered glass is the most expensive type of glass in 12mm thick & below bracket. It is more expensive by 250% compared to regular glass.
6. Low iron glass is more brittle compared to a regular glass, so it needs to be tempered. The only advantage of a low iron glass is that it is less greenish compared to a regular glass because it has lower iron content. Iron is what gives the glass that greenish shade while adding strength to it.
.hoped you can have your dream tank soon..
